Headshell/Tonearm Combo

I have a Thorens TD124 Mkll turntable with a AudioTechnica AT-ML170 cartridge(MM cartridge) mounted in a Ortofon SH-4 Headshell/Ortofon AS212 tonearm. Do any of you guys have any experience with the AS212 tonearm and know of a good headshell match with this tonearm? I have read that the headshell/tonearm match is essential to get the best sound out of a cartridge. Thanks

Your very rare cartridge may be too high compliant for the tone arm and headshell. :idea:
 
Best headshell for it, a medium mass headshell. Best cartridge for this arm, medium mass MC and MM or MI . Denon's DL 103 is nice, the Ortofon SPU is what commonly was on the business end of this arm. And the Ortofon 2M line is nice on this arm.

Hi,

I'm quite familiar with the old AS212 arm.* Most of the above is total nonsense.

Its a relatively medium mass aluminium piped S-shaped tone arm. Ideally
what you want from a headshell is two locating pins, but try finding them.

I think your wasting your time worrying about headshells and arms.
If you really care convert the arm properly to a fixed headshell type . **

Technics made the best low mass headshells (which is what you want)
but its hard to discern the real McCoy from likely inferior chinese clones :

* I used one (original headshell) on the first turntable I rebuilt.
I didn't rebuild the arm, I did on the next to some benefit.

** Try using loctite instead of the rubber washer. Another trick to
try is a thin copper washer bent to be concave / convex instead.
It only works once generally, I think Kab sell them.

FIxed head arms are great too, if you play one type of record. Or you own two or three of them. P.S. Thanks for the knowledge this is more medium mass, which means that you have lots of nice cartridge options MM and MC. Fixed head tonearms are sometimes nice, but not for those who like different cartridges, play records with specialist styli needs, or other such examples.
 
There is a lot to know to get all the variables right. Thanks for your responses guys. If anyone else wants to chime in, go right ahead.
