heat from kenwood ka-8100

I wrote earlier about heat from my kenwood ka-8100. how much clearance does it need between components? My listening room is small but I can smell the amp. How hot is too hot? It is warm to the touch but I do not want to overheat it.

You should have at least an inch or so between the top of the case and anything above. Has to be some adequate space to allow airflow. My KA-8150 runs warm to touch, not hot. If you smell something, I would investigate a little further. Could be that it just needs a cleaning.

What type of speakers and wire are you using?

Smelling´s no good.

Get it checked out before it stinks.

Seriously now, my KA-8100 runs warm driving my kef´s , which, I believe, are a 6 ohm nominal load, but it never smells. If it smells like burnt, it´s probably because something is getting burnt.

A burning smell is NEVER good. I once picked up a tuner that had a smell like Woodstock, if you get my drift. Seems that it had been used in a room where the folks, lots of them, liked to light up a joint, lots of them. A few cleanings and vacuumings fixed the problem.

Every piece of Kenwood gear I've owned has run cool, barely warm. Give it some breathing room and don't worry about it. If its getting hot, you probably have a bias issue or something.

IIRC, the manual stated 2" clearance above the top. i never had that much, and the amp ran very warm, but did so for many years without complaint.

My 8100 runs pretty warm, but I never have any other units on top. Even though it would make sense to put the turntable on top of it for space reasons.

The previous original owners had the KT7500 tuner on top since new. I asked about it and the lady had no idea what I was talking about since it was her husband's system. So i rebiased it to manual, set dc to zero and same deal. Sounds and measures fine.
