Heathkit aa-151 question

I'm no pro when it comes to tubes so I thought that I would run this by you folks here. I have a question about powering up a tube amp that has been plugged but may not have been used in a good while. Since it has been plugged in is it safe to just power it up like normal or would I still need to go through the process of bringing the power up slowly on it with a variac?
