Heathkit Altecs on SF Craigslist

Very close to the 846B Valencia in performance, the Heath cabinets are nicer. Price is near the top of the range. Something in the 400-750 range would probably be more appropriate and generate more enthusiasm.

I had a pair of Altec 848a Flamenco's, basically a Valencia with oak veneer cabinet and funky mediterranean grill. I sold them for $1K last year and they were in similar condition. IMHO, his asking price is in the ball park for someone who wants an awesome sounding and rare classic speaker. I do regret selling them though I did it to help fund a pair of JBL L300's. If I had the cash, I would probably buy them and sit on them for awhile.

Thanks- yeah I was thinking before I posted - I've got some extra cash (amp cash) - should I? - however I love my cornwalls and have no desire for another set of speakers - yet room. The altecs do not seem to come up very often and when I see them on eBay - they go for a couple grand.

I saw some flamencos on eBay and the bidding was very high - that same week someone on this site posted getting those same speakers (if I recall - asking what type of speakers are these...) from a thrift store for hardly anything - major score.

Thanks,

I really like the Altecs with tubes. My biggest complaint was the top end, a bit lacking to my ears. That is one reason I opted for the 3 way JBL's. That said, if I had the Eico HF-20's when I still had the Altecs, they would most likely still be here.

That's because most of the home-use Altecs like the Valencias and Flamencos used 806 compression drivers. Swap them out for 802s or 902s and you'll get that top end back.

It seems those are pretty expensive compression drivers.:scratch2: Think I will stick with the JBL's.

$200/ea. for brand-new 902s or $250/ea. for brand new 802s at GPA. That's not too bad, really, especially when the 806s can be sold to help defray the cost.
