Hello just joined the community and want to thank everyone for all the shared info I've gleaned already...
Hope I'm posting in the right location for this- and I apologize if I have so many questions as I'm a bit of a newbie
I recently acquired a pair of Heathkit AS-101 cabinets that were empty of the original Altec Lansing horns and LF drivers. After much searching and deliberation I am not sure how I want to reload them. I have read they are fairly sought after with original parts but as a newcomer to the hi-fi world and vintage audio I am apprehensive about spending the money to rebuild them and not be satisfied with the sound they produce. I really would like to build something unique that I can listen to for a long time as I really love the look of these cabinets.
I did decide to definitely load them with a pair of AL 808-8A Compression drivers with beautiful gold H-811B horns that I got on ebay that were in amazing tested condition.
Is it an 'audio sin' if I upgrade the woofers with newer JBL parts (perhaps a JBL 2265HPL NEO, or JBL 2226H Transducer woofer?) I've read the original 401-149 woofers lack a bit in the low end?
As for the horns having a colored or lacking mid/high range that I've read about in some places would there be anything gained by supplementing them with a super tweeter (such as a JBL Selenium ST400/ST450, or Hertz ST44). I believe these would fit mounted beneath the horn and the upper corner of the woofer.
Lastly for a crossover I obviously do not have anything at the moment but I've been advised of a local shop in Waukesha, Wisconsin called AudioVentures that can build custom to whatever is loaded in the cabinet.
Please let me know if I'm crazy for trying a Frankenstein's Monster rebuild and if anyone has any suggestions as I'm sure you all have much more knowledge than I do. Thanks in advance - I'll definitely post as I work on this project.
