That model is one that every vintage tubeophile wants. The W6A or M. The Altec output trans has spectacular specifications, maybe one of the best of the era. They are supposed to be differences between the 2 circuits and the later version corrects some issues. They are very rare as only a few thousand produced.

I have read something similar about these being very good. I had a stroke of good fortune as I found this locally on craigslist. It is very heavy feels like close to 50lbs. I feel since its so old and rare I want to keep it original and not make any changes to it. Is that the usual consensus on these?

Usually if we intend to use them, we recap at the very least, to prevent damage in the event of a cap failure. The transformers cannot be easily replaced. If there are updates to the model that yours dosen't have, it wouldn't hurt the value to bring it up to the last revision. My Fairchilds have updates from 1614? to 6CA7's per a factory update letter.

I replaced all the caps except the canncapacitors, which i reformed by slow powering up with a variac over about 12 hours. How long before the can caps need replacing?

If it were mine. I would install new caps under the hood, if you have room, or get Hayseed Hamfest to make new ones.

Those old can caps are well made but they are close to 60 years old so who knows when they will call it quits. One way to tell is if they are getting warm quickly when first powered up. But for peace of mind it is just better to change them out with new caps. I also wanted to say that the old carbon comp resistors will develop more resistance as they age this will also affect the voltages. The CC resistors are also more noisy than modern metal oxide or metal film and carbon film. About the only spot to keep a carbon comp is in grid stopper position. There is much debate on resistors so, you can read up and decide for yourself.

I do have very detailed assembly instructions so I was wondering if I should just get all new parts and redo the whole thing with new sockets, caps and resistors. But from what I read some people are very against that, and since Im pretty new at this I just wanted to do the minimum and see if I could at least just get it going. Im open to suggestion for long term care and thanks for the tips. Its defenitely something Im keeping. its too cool

Some people or collectors think that the way it is after all these years is the most authentic that it can be. Unfortunately for electronics, and not like fine furniture, that can be a very unsafe even dangerous thing. If my unit was in really 'mint' condition i usually keep it that way but i don't really use it. I tend to keep it more as a museum piece and get another for playing and rebuilding.

Im guessing its more like a vintage car, it can be all original but youd want new tires, breaks etc.
