Heating Costs

I've spent almost $1000 so far on oil. I'll need to fill up one more time. Next winter I should have a tankless gas water heater installed, windows weather stripped, new storms installed and some new wood windows to replace the POS vinyl. I may insulate the second floor ceiling. Not quite sure how much is in there now. We are also considering a fireplace insert rather then just a heat exchanger.

We are on Natural Gas. Our last two bills averaged around $350. Each year I try to do some cold weather treatments on the house. I am going to do some window replacement in the basement this year.

My Father works for an oil company and is actually a Propane Delivery driver, so he knows quite a bit about this subject. Propane has been in the high 3's as of late and he can get it for low 1's as a worker, but it has to be in small quantities(100gal or less). Even at that price they are still making quite a bit of money off him. Its just price fixing, if you figure out the efficiency rating of all the different heating options (excluding electric) they all come out very close to the same price in the end, sad world we live in.

I have natural gas, which is tapped not too far from here. I pay about 1.6 cents per cubic foot. Only my furnace runs on gas - my last bill was $58; during the summer months I still pay over $12 just to keep the service turned on.

When we had the house built some twenty years ago the exterior walls are 2 x 6, with insulation to match. Ten inches of fiberglass in the attic and all double pane windows. I have since insulated and lined the garage exterior walls and ceiling and put in a Trane 1400 high efficiency heat pump. I must confess though after the years of efficient low cost electricity from Hydro Quebec and Ontario Hydro, paying the thieves here over ten cents a kW on average does grate on my nerves.

No natural gas here so we are all electric. Constipation Energy nicked us for $493 last month, I expect it will be closer to $600 for January. This winter has been a bitch.

Damn! Now I don't feel quite so bad about my $400 BGE bills during the colder months. Our house is a little smaller than yours, but I know its a lot less efficient.

Maybe its my turning the heat off first thing in the morning 4 days a week and not cranking it back up until just before my wife gets home...

Not to sidetrack the thread.

Well after the PSC kissed their rear end and granted them a 72% increase I suspect there are a lot of retirees wearing their parkas in the house.

Reading this thread makes me happy my normal bill is under 200 bucks.

Heck when I lived in Ottawa (Nepean actually) they only sent the meter reader around every second month, it did not pay to bill the customers monthly.

As I would be were I single, not that I'm complaining. The guy next door, probably the only single guy in my neighborhood, has a wood burning stove in his basement, scarcely turns on his heat.

He told me his winter BGE bill is about $100 or so.

Too bad you can't have the best of both worlds when you're married.

I can't wait to get my bill this month. last month it was so frigging cold they didn't read the meters. Well, I called and asked them why my bill was so low @150 bucks. Well those idiots estimated based on last year when NOBODY lived here!!! The lady on the phone suggested me paying more because they would correct it the following month. My god, I can only imagine if I had paid the minimum and been smacked with a double bill the following month! Morons.

I am praying that I paid enough. I took the previous months bill and added $100.
