Hello and introduction from Seattle - McIntosh and SAE and SpeakerLab

Rooke · 2020-05-10T22:58:51+00:00

Hello to all at this great forum! I have been lurking and have learned: = How to hook up an FM antennae correctly = That Digi-Key is an amazing resource = What Deoxit is, and why the new "Smart Straw" cans are rubbish My hobbies include drumming, classic motorcycle restoration, and listening to music. My father had some really interesting stereo equipment but he died young and my brother and I hardly knew what to do with what he left. Over time, and despite being a drummer, I took a big interest in amplifiers but never picked up a soldering iron or took the time to understand a multi meter. Mostly it was trying to resurrect a Fender Twin Reverb or sit in awe at a rotating Leslie whop-whop'ing away. I do have a fear of circuit boards and burning critical equipment so to date I have refrained from trying to replace items I am told need replacing. For example, I have an SAE setup that includes the classic broken Volume slider - I have the part to replace it, but after unburying the unit from all the screws I see I am up against a set of soldered connections and so abandoned this to better minds (for now anyways). The equipment I own is listed below and I backed into all of it without knowledge of what I was looking at though I have gained a healthy respect today. For example, I traded my Kenwood KA-3500 and receiver for the Mcintosh equipment because the person who owned it at the time hated how hot it ran. The equipment includes: = McIntosh MX-113 pre-amp fed into a McIntosh MC-2105 amplifier = SAE 2900 pre-amp fed into an SAE 2400L amplifier, with an SAE 3200 FM Tuner and an SAE 4200 Speaker Switching system = Pair of SpeakerLab 3's and another pair of S19's For the life of me I do not know where the SAE equipment came from excepting the tuner which I just purchased to match the rest of the system. It has followed me from house to house ending up in a closet. Mainly because of the McIntosh equipment which is my primary set up. I leave the McIntosh equipment to a very amazing person named John who owns Northwest Audio Service, once located on Aurora Avenue in Seattle and now based in Renton. He is a legend in town and can talk the rear legs off a dog. When I first met him he was in his shop with his dog and an Aladdin's cave of equipment, including wondrous testing equipment and a genuine Fender white cabinet / amp. Today the McIntosh equipment is removed from service and heading to John for a complete test and refurbish, and repair of the optic FM system. The SAE equipment however is fair game. I recently put wires to everything and tested things in preparation for sale. The crackling switches and indecipherable parametric equalizer sliders got me to start researching and now I really would prefer keeping everything and making it better with the help of this 'Board and the "extra" time Covid has forced on all of us. So really that is why I am here and how I first came to know this BBS. I can see dead things in the bowels of the heat sink of the 2400L and have reviewed repair of this same amp. on YouTube so it is game on. My hope is to use the wisdom of this BBS to properly clean and replace what I can and maintain these great devices for the next owner. Thanks for listening! My first proper question on the 2400L will appear shortly. John P.S. If you have a copy of the user's and / or service manual for the SAE 3200 FM tuner i would be grateful for a copy of it or to purchase outright.
