My name is Peter (you can all me Pete) and I'm from Orlando, Florida. My reason for joining is that I found this site while looking for the specs on Polk Monitor 7's. I bought a pair in 1978 and they still sound as great today as they did when I got them.
The last time I used them before this weekend was in November 2009. They've been sitting in a closet ever since. Why, you ask? I moved into an apartment with paper-thin walls and couldn't get to enjoy them as I usually do.
However, I just bought a house and now I don't have to worry about irate neighbors banging on my walls.
I had sold off my old audio equipment - except for the Polk's, my turntable, and 12 gauge Monster speaker wire - to buy a home theater set-up (HDTV, Blu-Ray Player w/ Wi-Fi, and Receiver). I don't have a center speaker or a pair of surround sounds yet, so, for the time being, the 5.1 is being simulated through the Monitor 7's.
I had to make a stop at Radio Shack to get new fuses for the 7's before I could hook them up.
I scored a new Onkyo TX-S343 receiver at HHGregg for $150 - marked down to 1/2 of its original price. My other new equipment so far is a Sceptre 42" HDTV and a Sony BXD-3500 Blu-Ray w/ Streaming Media.
My old stuff includes an RCA DRC-6000N DVD/PVR that only has S-Video input for recording (TV tuner is analog) but has component video and optical audio output. The turntable is a Kenwood KD-3070 with a Stanton 881S stylus. The only problem is that the Onkyo - being a Home Theater receiver - doesn't have an input for the turntable. I'll need to either find a pre-amp and run it through the AUX input or get an analog-to-digital converter (which will allow me to transfer vinyl to disk).
I have an A/V "ICU" with old equipment that stopped working for one reason or another. I pulled the plug (literally) on my Panasonic DMR-EZ27 Digital DVD Recorder after getting the dreaded "U99" error (I may try to fix it since DVD recorders are hard to find). I also have two upscale VCR's: an Aiwa HV-MX1 (that does NTSC<->PAL conversions) with a cassette stuck in it and a Toshiba M-758 that may just need a fuse. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the remote control (which was the reason why I got this model).
The remote has a jog shuttle that lets you move the tape forward or in reverse, either frame-by-frame or user-controlled playback speed. However, I've seen them on eBay for about $25 so if I can revive the Toshiba, I'll get the remote.
Anyway, that's about it for my inventory. I'm happy to be here and hope to meet a lot of fellow audiophiles.
PS: I forgot to mention that I'm using a pair of Allsop metal computer monitor stands for my speaker stands. It looks funky but does the job.
