Hello! My grandfather recently gifted me a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers, along with a G.A.S. Son of Ampzilla power amp and a Thoebe preamp. He also gave me a Hitachi FT-920 tuner, although it's currently in the shop.
After refoaming one of the woofers, cleaning the amplifier, fixing a loose ground, and dealing with some dirty RCA jacks, I finally got everything up and running and it sounds amazing.
What's especially cool is that this pair of DQ-10s originally belonged to my uncle, whom I never had the chance to meet. My grandfather told me that the crossovers were recapped by Regnar sometime in the 1990s. None of the components are museum-quality examples cosmetically or sound wise for that matter, but I still think it's a killer setup.
I also run a Fosi TP-02 subwoofer amp connected to a Logitech Z-5500 10-inch subwoofer. It's definitely not an audiophile-grade sub, but it works well for certain genres of music. Space is also a bit limited, so the photo I attached isn't actually where the speakers are normally set up.
My grandfather has owned the G.A.S. equipment since it was new. Back in the day, he ran a pair of DQ-10s with a G.A.S. "The Bridge," two Son of Ampzillas in bridge, and the Thoebe preamp. He told me people would come over just to listen to the system. Sometime in the mid 1980s, one of the secondary amps failed, so he sold it off cheaply and replaced it with an Adcom amplifier, which he still uses today.
The remaining G.A.S. gear ended up sitting in his garage for more than 30 years until I brought it home and cleaned it up. He still owns "The Bridge," which appears to be a fairly rare and valuable piece of audio equipment.
I'm incredibly excited to have this setup—especially considering the price was free.99. I have a feeling this may be the beginning of a very expensive hobby, but I'm looking forward to it!
