My name is Ian, living in Osaka.

I’ve followed AK off and on for years but never subscribed, just lurked!

I moved here from California a couple of years ago and had to leave behind my JBL 4311B’s and my Thorens TD147.

My wife and I are finally moving out of our parents’ place into our own apartment so I will be finally getting to build my system up again.

How is the space situation in an apartment in Osaka for accommodating a sound system?

A great question, one I will likely bring up in another thread!

I’m moving a week and a half from now, and will have a couple of rooms to pick from, relatively small. One of which (the largest) is a tatami room which will present its own set of challenges for listening, but given how many people here have the exact same situation I’m hoping to be able to swing something good.

Luckily at our new place we have no neighboring units, just upstairs units (half of which are currently vacant). Downstairs neighbors are izakayas so not stressing too much about noise!

The house we are leaving is my FIL’s, he’s rocking a Pioneer Superior setup with mono blocks (!!!). I’ve given up any illusions of either receiving them from him or getting anything close to it.

I have my JBL’s posted on CL in my area back in California and currently am trying to sell them through word of mouth. Once I do I’ll be able to get some good speakers on the local market. Everything vintage here tends to be in great shape. On top of that, lots of shops that can repair gear.

Since you are a JBL fan living in Japan, you may enjoy the Kenrick Sound youtube channel. Lots of mindboggling JBLs restored to heavenly levels of sound and finish. I can (and have) watched for hours.

Oh, I’m a longtime viewer! I enjoy watching their setup/delivery videos in people’s homes too.

I’ve glanced at their homepage a few times too. Everything sold out which I suppose is to be expected.

I think I’m likely going to be limited to Mercari or similar used online markets for something I can afford.

Every piece of equipment I've ever owned has been affordable. I'm confident you'll end up with something great.

Mercari, certainly and yahoo auctions might be worth checking out. My wife likes rummage sales and such and I find that I can have a fun time looking for equipment while she looks at clothes and furniture.
