Help from Poland...best speakers to pair with a Marantz 2250B

Hi there!

Greetings from Poland!

As a suggestion made by the guys from the Marantz forum here, I am now requesting help to select a pair of good speakers for my "new vintage" Marantz 2250B receiver. 50wpc. As you may know Marantz 22xx are well known for its sort of warm "tube like" sound. Besides that, I live in an apartment here in Warsaw so I don't think huge speakers would be the choice. In my ignorance I think 3 ways would be better than 2 as the receiver has a control/knob for mids. Am I right? Also the impedance should be 8 ohms as it was recommended. The offer here is quite limited here. Any suggestions and/or comments?

From occasionally watching Ebay intl. listings the JBL LX-44 seem pretty common in that region.
(IIRC they were originally manufactured in Denmark & marketed widely in Europe)

So maybe keep an eye out for a pair of those,I know I really enjoy mine (own two pair) & I feel the Marantz should pair well with them.

I would agree that a 3 driver might be better, though I have heard 2 driver speakers that had it all together. I could make a case for Beovox (Bang Olufsen) S-45 speakers that are 3 driver, that i enjoy. I have picked up mine for cheap over the years though, and I dont know if any of those show up near you. They are small and for what they are, offer high fidelity with quality drivers. The Marantz 2250b has the bass, mid, and treble controls, just like the Kenwood receivers I have been using with these speakers. I also like JBL as much as Bret, and own a few different models. it would be hard to go wrong with those he suggested.
 
I was taking a look at a pair of JBL LX-44 as suggested. There is one offer right now. I see that the frequency response starts at 45hz. Wouldn't it be to high?

The 20hz-20hkz as a rated frequency response is not an actual. The receiver is severely underrated....

I’ve heard some JBL-L250 with that receiver which sounds quite nice. JBL continued to release the L250 for decades so you might find an affordable pair or even a couple of pair.

Typically that rating is at something like -3db or so,but where that point is acutally measured can vary somewhat.
But the speakers generally will still be putting out bass below that 45Hz rating,it's just rolling off db's as the Hz drop lower & lower so it's not as noticable.

That's where the tone controls can help out (or even an EQ).

Anyhow should you find that you need/want response lower than 45Hz all you would need to do is add a nice active subwoofer.

Thing is actually having response down to 20Hz is'nt always needed to enjoy a pair of speakers.
Also the speakers that can actually offer such typically means the speakers are going to be much larger and/or more expensive as a general rule.
So speakers that offer response down to 20Hz are'nt gonna make you the most popular tenant in the apartment building.

All I can say is this: I've been perfectly happy with my LX-44,,,even w/o a sub...
The system powering those LX-44 uses an Adcom GFA-535 mk1 power amp rated @ 60wpc > 8ohms.
And it has plenty of bass IMHO.

I have those speakers as well, they are fragile to move. The front grills are as butterfly wings, and there is a plastic grill over the port that likes to break, if speaker is picked up in that area unknowingly. I also have the MC150 model, and the S75. I enjoy the S45 over all of them at the moment. Crossovers have been updated, boxes lined with stick-on roofing patch material (comes in a roll), speaker connections updated, woofer stuffing updated and tweaked. I do enjoy larger speakers ( I have Klipsch Chorus), but for easy set-up and moving around, the smaller ones are my "daily drivers".

Hi JCTroncoso JBL L-36 would be great for the 2250B. Like motorstereo said you can't go wrong with any quality speaker. Which is true as I've used my 2250B with Cizek, Advent, A/D/S, Wharfedale to name a few. I think the L-36 is an excellent choice.
 
Besides the JBL L36 Decade, I have a new offer: EPI 200C (3 drivers)

JBL L36: They are in France and I'm bidding for them. They are in excellent shape (at least from what you see from outside). Haven't contacted the seller, but apparently is a private owner.

EPI 200C: In good shape as vendor says (they look quite fine). They are here in Poland. Seller is a vintage-audio shop.

Facts:

1.- I cannot listen to or personally test any of both.
2.- For the time being (remember for the JBL's is a bidding) there is a total difference of 20 euros more for JBL's. This difference could grow up though.
3.- The fact that the EPI's are in Poland is a point to be considered. I can complain if something is wrong.
4.- I have been reading and googling that, apparently, there are more possibilities of spare parts for recapping for JBL's (just in case for the future) This is just my assumption.

Bottom line: Could the quality or performance "tilt the balance" in favor of one or the other?

I will very much appreciate your comments and opinions.

Welcome JC, might I suggest some speakers from your country, Pylon? I have heard a couple of them and thought they were good sounding speakers, although you may be looking for something different? Also maybe WLM, they are very efficient, good sounding speakers. Many get put off by the cone tweeters-do not, they are well implemented in these speakers.

Check prices, and try to buy at a price you could sell at, in case they dont work out. JBL is a popular brand, really hard to go wrong if you dont pay too much. Same goes for any vintage speaker.
 
Hi JC troncoso, I have a pair JBL-36 with my Marantz 2270 and they sound wonderful. I think with your Marantz 2250b must sound wonderful too. They have a fantastic synergy. You can't go wrong with these JBL.

I have been using JBL 4312's and occasionally JBL 4312A's with my Marantz 2250B receiver for years. Seems like a perfect match to me.
