Help ! I cant find this surround.

I looked in all the usual places, and googled myself sick trying to find a replacement rubber surround for some 10 inch CTS woofers in a pair of
Avid 102s. I ordered a pair from speakerworks but their not even close
and I missed the size by a 1/4 anyway and the roll is totally different.
Mine have a wide roll with a deep angle inner lip. The outer lip appears to
flair out from the roll up higher than normal surrounds. This kinda explains why it had a thin factory gasket under it attached to the basket.

The following pictures show what Im dealing with. This is a Butyl Rubber surround, but at this point I would settle for (any surround that would be close)
I have already ordered the wrong ones once, I dont want to make that mistake
twice.
Here are the measurements : Inside roll /Cone 7 1/2" inside surround 7", outside roll 8 3/4", outside surround 9 3/4"

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Iv'e even considered picking up a set of 10 inch CTS woofers at auction, but they all seem to have the square
magnets. Here are mine from the Avid 102s.

talk to John at Msound about some boston acoustics filled fillet surrounds...they're foam, but dimensions (large roll and angled inner lip) I bet are close.

Midwest speaker has a butyl rubber surround kit listed on their site that is pretty close. Inside roll/cone and inside surround are almost dead on, but outside roll and outside of surround are about 1/4" bigger than the dimensions you need. You could trim the outside of the surround and it might work. Only other problem is this is the "R10KIT" which is currently listed as out of stock:

If it was me, first I'd contact speakerworks and tell them it doesn't fit. Maybe they have others that will.

Did you try Tom at myaudioaddiction.com ? If you can give him all the measurements....diameters,roll area, and such ,usually he has something that will work. He's excellent at communication also. In fact, that kind of looks like the wide roll JBL application.

No I haven't tried them yet, I will check them out. Thanks for the info

I saw those after I figured out who you were talking about in your last post
Everything looks good except that inside measurement, Wich is 1/8 too wide and I dont think i can get by with only a 1/8 attached to the cone.

The ones mentioned above from midwest would work I think, but they are out of stock it looks like.

Im just guessing but wouldn't it change the sound of these if I dont get them back close to original? I think the original surround had more (throw) than most of those I keep seeing listed.

This is turning out to be much tougher than I thought it would be, its definitely not a common type of surround, in fact it favors the surrounds you see for
vehicle speakers more than anything else iv'e seen so far.

Might be worth a phone call to see when they expect to have them back in stock. If anything, it seems like the roll size of their R10KIT is a bit larger than your original surrounds, so you'd have plenty of throw.

Thanks, I was thinking I might do that at some point if I cant locate a sure fit
replacement. Right now Gorden is looking into it for me and I havent heard back from a couple of other sources I was looking into.

I was hoping some of the Avid owners here (past and present) might have a lead on some or may have replaced them before. Im beginning to see why now that Im having trouble finding this size.

It would be nice to have a thread dedicated to Sources for Speaker surrounds by models that members could add to as they come across them during refoaming jobs. That would be especially handy for lesser known brands that aren't searchable by name anymore.
A thread like that could be used for many different types of gear
and would be extremely helpfull for anyone new to DIY or for hard to find brands.

The Avids I own are mismatched:yes: 103&102 that were picked up at a Goodwill here in Tucson with the surrounds intact. I haven't replaced them as of yet:no: They are not seen everyday and even on "The Bay" Not to many show up. The tweets for them are available now but not the surrounds.

It may be a good idea to search for a CTS/Woofer intacted instead:scratch2:

I bought the right tweeters for them as well as new caps for the tweeter crossover, I also bought 2 sets of good binding post to replace those spring clip
connectors that will except banana plugs.
I looked for CTS woofers but the only ones Iv'e seen use the square magnet and have different surrounds on them, This would not work well in a speaker that was designed to run that long throw wide roll surround. So at this point Im hoping to find surrounds and fix mine.

If I manage to do that, then maybe someone else may benefit from this search in the future.

Good deal:thmbsp: I'll keep my eyes open for the surrounds as well.. You will really like those tweeters:music:

I can get a surround that is awful close, however, not sure on your measurements (not doubting, just not sure what exactly you measured). For starters, under the lip you can see where the surround attaches to the cone, which is not the full lip of the surround. Is the "inside of the roll" 7" or the outside diameter of the cone 7"? The other issue is the OD of the surround, which you have at 9.75". Can't tell from the image, but does the outer lip of the surround actually go to the outer edge of the speaker frame? What are the measurements from the inside edge of the mounting holes (measured diagonally)?

Inside diameter of the original surround is 7 "
Outside diameter of the cone 7 1/2 "
Inside diameter of the roll 7 1/2 "
Outside diameter of the roll approximately 8 3/4
outside diameter of the original surround 9 3/4 to 9 7/8 basically it goes edge to edge in the frame. As the pictures show it had a 1/2 " wide thin paper gasket that is glued flush with the surround edge and fit snug in the basket.
Im starting to think this was done to speed up the manufacturing process
when they built these. And from what I can tell so far the VC is going to be a PITA to center, there is practically no clearance on the VC.
