How old are you guys? You're probably from a far generation because yes it is a very difficult concept for me to understand and the will be difficult for the rest of the people my age to understand.

That hole in the transformer looks normal, my guess is the laminations were punched that way because sometimes a mounting bolt could be used...

The capacitor looks like it vented, again that doesn't look like a drilled hole.

Get a service manual and troubleshoot this properly... You news to isolate this into blocks, and find the short. I recently repaired a receiver which was displaying similar symptoms, turned out to be shorted output transistors on one channel. Two new transistors and a new fuse cured all and its back with the owner.

You won't get this working just by looking at it, be methodical and use test equipment and troubleshooting techniques.

I already have the service manuals and the diagram of the entire thing. I know that the capicator hasnt vented because it would have been bulged and messy. This one is a perfect hole with build up that happens when you drill into something. Also, when i first opened it up, there were metal shavings near the capacitor. I know that the hold drilled in the transformer is definitely not a mount because it drills into the coil and also there is damaged plastic on the outside that got damaged by the drill. Ive seen pictures of the inside of one of these and there are no holes in the transformer. Besides that, someone tried to pry the transformer open. The easy part will be replacing the capicators (already got some on the way)... hard part is replacing this transformer due to the spaghetti of wires coming in and out of it for the 120v, 220v, and 240v selector.

As @SteveA suggested in post #38, the holes were probably drilled to see if the unit was being used to smuggle narcotics.

The drilled transformer is almost definitely why your fuses are blowing and fire is shooting out of it.
See what voltages the transformer puts out according to the SM find something that you can sub in. You don't have to worry about buying one that has different primary windings for multi-voltage since you're going to be running it here. You can scrap all of that selector stuff and get one that has a single primary for 120v. You just need to find out what the output is and if it's center tapped or not.

The tape deck doesn't work, hopefully it just needs belts. Also, the speaker foams need replacing. Are they available or do I have to get crafty?
Also, it is a spectrum analyser. The bars move with the music and are unlit when the music goes quiet.

Yeah, honestly I came to that conclusion as well. Anyway, I was about to pay someone to fix it since I didn't have time to be playing around with it. Then I found one locally for 40 dollars, and I talked her down to $25 dollars. Also found matching speakers this weekend, and I talked him down to $20. I love it when people don't know how much some people (like me) are willing to pay for them off of ebay. I was able to sell parts off of the one I ordered from Columbia and get half of my money back. What an experience... and what a story...

Did you get the remote with your stereo? If you did I could buy it off of you if the price is right
