Help identify these Advent speakers!

Found these last night. One tweeter does not work. Heavy bullnose cabinets. Look like large Advents, but I've never seen this type before. They have a port and rubber surrounds. Any insight/specs/tips on how to fix this tweeter would be great! Thanks guys and gals!

Those probably sound pretty good. I've owned a couple of sets of speakers that had Philips tweeters. I still have one pair, although they are not currently in use.

The tweeter sort of looks like those used in Wharfedales. With the exception of one model (if I am not mistaken) Advents do not have ports.

Well, have to take it back. The drivers look like things Genesis would use, Phillips tweeter and EPI woofer, but Genesis didn't ever use a port.

My Money is on Grayfx SP-8

Very good! But, actually, Grayfx SP-10.

Thanks guys! How does one go about fixing it's dome tweeter?

First, you can carefully remove the dead tweeter and carefully unplug it from the two leads. Use a multimeter to see if you get a reading (it'll probably be between 4-8 ohms). Then take your speaker cable and attach it to the tweeter and play it at low volume. If it works, then you have a crossover problem. :thmbsp:

The reason I say "carefully" twice is because I've pulled off the little metal tabs more than once.

Narrowing the problem

Ok I swapped tweeters- it is NOT the crossover. Definitely bad tweeter! How hard can they be to fix?? Such a simple device. Loose wire/bad solder? What should I check? Thanks again guys! We'll get it!

Typically tweeters have been 'burned up' by too much heat from current through the coil. Fixing involves replacing coil.

Here some pics of an 'orphan' tweeter i happen to have. Looks just like the Phillips tweeter pictured in posts 1 & 2, though the numbers are some different. Can anyone interpret these numbers enough to say if this one can substitute in the S-10 application?

The one I have measures 6.4 DCO, by the way.

You can buy NOS Philips tweeters on ebay for single digit prices. If memory serves, Philips tweeters use a removable dome assembly. You can swap the new one into your old face plate. Buy (2) so they match, swap them both, call it a day.

There were a couple or more versions of that tweeter, cloth dome and polycarb dome- they do sound exceptional in the right setup!
