Help identifying Audio Research turntable.

We are not in the US and sorry for not stating that earlier. We are based in New Zealand.

Also had emailed Audio Research a few days ago and just received a reply from them. It is as follows:
"Dear John

Summary: That is a product made by a different company with the same name. I believe the other Audio Research was a Canadian company that also made speakers. I do not know if they are even still in business. In any case that is not one of our products so I am not able to provide any information for you.

So it does appear to be from Audio Research Canada. Does anyone know where I can find info on these systems?

You're in the right place to find a source if there is one such.

With a ceramic phono cartridge and those rca type speaker connectors I wouldn't spend a lot of money or time on it.

BTW: When you ask questions about gear it helps a lot of you tell us where you are posting from. We don't need your home address. Naming the country is usually sufficient.

As requested here is a photo of the back.

I don't think the Canadian Audio Research would have commissioned a unit with DIN connectors and 230V 50hz only.

Maybe there was an Australian Audio Research as well.

The info I posted earlier in this thread was found doing a simple Google search "Audio Research Canada" as was mentioned earlier they probably weren't in business long plus the quality seems lacking so my guess is they didn't sell much.

Wow, that's bizarre. Audio Research is a well known high end audio manufacturer, and this system obviously did not come from them. In fact, It wouldn't surprise me if the company had been hit with a lawsuit as soon as they released their first product.

One would think however I'm wondering if maybe ARC didn't have a trademark or somehow by adding Electronics" you can get away with that in this case in Canada

Oh I see, I don't think this is the case. I'm fairly certain it was purchased at one of our local electronics retailers, and they are a reputable electronics store that is still in operation.


I did attempt to clean them with an electrical cleaner from the outside of the unit, however I will try again from inside once I take bottom off

Shooting cleaner at the outside RARELY of the unit does any good. You need to get cleaner INSIDE the CONTROL. Some disassembly, like taking the cover off might be needed.
Not all cleaners are the same or work as well as others, what were you using?

Back to this. IMO, more important than getting info on the company, especially since, as it seems, it's most important to the OP to get it running properly. We've already covered the scratchy controls.

The other issues are there is an audible motor noise coming through the turntable. It's not super loud but it is there.

Does the noise manifest itself through the speakers or do you hear it from the unit itself? Can you describe what it sounds like? Or better yet, shoot a video with the sound audible and post on Youtube.

Can you post a clear picture of the turntable taken from the top? Turntables in systems like this were almost always made by one of only a handful of different companies (and usually not the manufacturer of the system itself), so it's usually pretty easy to find documentation on them.

And third is there is a constant hum coming through the speakers. It is particularly bad at high volume.

Do you get the hum when you play the radio or the turntable, or both? Does it happen even when the turntable motor is off?
