Dear drbiggles; retrovert; Pat Tobin and for sure Rudy...and beyond henceforth "The Bozak Cult"
My thanks to you all for all for your tireless experiments. comments and efforts as I have been soldering in Pat Tobins mod into a pair of 302's my mom made in 1960. i being 4 years old. These speakers minus the midrange as she was on a budget she told me the other day... she 84. . I added two ebay 209b's to her "budget" B199 and B200y's...One of these tweeters acted like a car bumper and took a "hit" but still worked. A garage fire moved the chared remains from a poettey studio to my basement... I replaced it with an 8 ohm Parts express 8 ohm tweeter that should be of higher quality but is doing the job. (Not sure of B200Y resistance 4 or 8 ohms). Further I a Added a flower pot (a red beauty from Home Depot ) to the back of the ebay 209b's.
I have almost 60 years of listening to these elegant two ways. Brubeck, Peter Nero, Miles, Hard rock; soft rock; Joni Mitchel; now classical music. I was very sceptical that I would like the Tobin mod and mid range I was adding to my emotional journey...I built and tested using jumpers and then solder as I approved each step in my spider ridden basement. My dungeon has yeilded two most beautiful natural sounding vintage speakers. Nero's piano sounds like it is slighlty right sound stage to the drum and bass ;and moreover what Steinway intended as though my ear was close to the sound board.
My Dad "HH Scott, Ampex Reel to Reel Man" to attract other women..and Wharfdale W60's (there was a mariage seperation making me a collectors item) These huge magnet beauties W60's which I have and love as a "gold standard" to which to compare the Bozaks. This is all subjective of course. I love my mom AND dad but I love the Bozaks. I clearly knocked down a little of the brightness from my moms two channel efforts which Tobin refers to as a 'competitive bright sound' to the origianlly intented Bozak of 1960?? Tobin mod in 2011 returned the natural sound Rudy Bozak inteneded. Importantly your comments leaving me with direction and my education. L-pads that allow my ears to select the (brightness) that I want, and the mids that I added; and The B199 lows and reality that I have grown up with. The result close to Nirvana, with sound stage and reality from the records through the Project III turntable and Dynakit to the Bozaks. Through all the variables.... turntables, preamps, amps, speaker wire, soldering.. they sound great and so my thanks to you all for "sound guidance".
