Help identifying mystery eBay speakers.

TLDR, Im looking to upgrade my old speakers. Some sonys I found for free on Facebook, stumbled onto this listing of some speakers but the seller doesn't know the brand.

A few days worth of research and I haven't pulled anything. On some photos the seller listed it has a catalog number with 2935, and an serial number with 5520 A on the back top right.


I ran the photos through Google lens, it's a sort of image scanning software that pulls photos that resemble what you put in. I saw some notable comparisons. JVC VS-5342's look strikingly similar but the grill is different in the upper quarter and the speaker orientation is different. I also saw some Bozaks that looked fairly close but the catalogs I went through didn't turn up anything.


I'm guessing these are late 60s to early 70s given the styling of them, seller says they're pretty hefty and feel well made so the idea of them being. Reputable brand is definitely in question. If needed I'll drop some more photos but there's not much else to tell.

Had a look through a couple image search engines and the only thing that showed up was a reddit thread asking what they were and an ebay auction with identical information.

I kind of get the feeling they were "divorced" from one of those cabinet/speaker combo deals as nearly every manufacturer that makes/made speakers puts their label/badge proudly on the front fabric cover. The lack of any brand identifiers on the back kinda says "70's mass manufactured mail order catalog" item to me also. That would be consistent with them originally being part of a console set.

Something about the cabinet construction and the look of the drivers doesn't give me a feeling of "quality" either:

Assuming the pictures in the ebay auction I found are the ones you're looking at that is.

I'm just going by the impression they give me and guessing though. I don't recognize them either.....the front grill design is nice looking though, appearance wise.

The plywood speaker terminal plate with banana posts seems fishy to me. They may be speakers made for a particular chain of stores back in the day.



I would not consider them unless I could lay eyes and hands on them. The woofer surrounds have a sheen to them. Are the surrounds stiff? Cracked? Freshly coated (not a good thing, normally)? They may be a good deal at a quarter of their ask, if you are local and can pick up.

I thought the same but the level controls on the front appear to have the same plywood.

I have also seen woofers in the past with that sort of sticky material on the surround. Possibly like the stuff ADS used on their domes?

Almost looks like someone was going for that piano gloss black finish on the surrounds!

The surrounds are cloth, and the shiny stuff is the sealant.
