Help Identifying Speakers!

Hi all,

Im posting on behalf of a friend. He'd like to know what make/model speakers he's aquired. They have no identifying serial numbers or model numbers on them. They are Single driver, omnidirectional horns. Hoping someone out there can help us identify these.

Those came from a late 60's or early 70's record player console set. I've seen those before and think they are actually Zenith knock-offs made by RCA.
Replace the driver, brace them a bit and add some fill and you might have something.

Not Hi-Fi as they sit.
 
That's an interesting one. Obviously an upward firing Omni, but I've not seen that particular one before. I don't think is a Harman Kardon, or Zenith, though it's possible.

I'd try doing google image searches for "omnidirectional speakers", or maybe "vintage end table speakers"... that sort of thing.

Sorry, I'm of little help on this one, but I'll poke around... might get lucky.

...I see several folks have chimed in with Zenith. I'm curious, how heavy are they? Do they appear well built, or are they plastic/cardboard sort of things?

I am the friend,

I don't think they are Zenith, Harman Kardon or RCA that I can tell- They seem pretty well built- solid wood, well packed. No label or any other marking. I could only find one other pair via google and those were not marked either.

Any other suggestions, resources or info is very much appreciated!!!

Don't assume that Zenith/RCA/HK necessarily means flimsy and bad sounding -- the Zenith Circle of Sound speakers are heavy, durable, and reasonably good looking, as well as decent to good sounding for what they are.
Ditto the HK omnis that I've heard, though I'm not sure that the increased complexity of the multi driver HKs makes them sound better than the full range Zeniths -- but a long time passed between listening to one and than the other, so I could be all wrong.
Omnis sound nice outside.
 
Do they have rca plugs on the end of the speaker wire on each speaker? If so that "usually" indicates it came from a record playing console set much like the Circle of Sound. I'm not putting down your speakers, as I myself have a pair of Circle of Sound speakers which I plan to modify.

Check the antique sites on the web, mid-century modern is the bomb right now. I see these things going for upwards of $125 a pair.

I did see a pair just like yours in a thread on AK about three years ago but now I cannot find it. I'm almost certain they came from a console set, whether Panasonic, RCA, Zenith or something else. Most likely has a full range driver and if like the Zenith's....it will be a 6 or 6 1/2" whizzer cone. The design has potential if you upgrade the driver with something modern.

Maybe someone is trying to move a set on that auction site and you can get more info there.

They are plain wire, no RCA plug. A friend found a pair on an auction site, but they were having the same issues in identifying them!
 
Even if they don't have RCA plugs, that may be a result of the plugs being cut off. That would be true of the several pairs I have had at various times.
