I'm in the process of putting together a starter system for my 23 year old to play his vinyl. At the moment I've got my eye on a Nikko NR-300 receiver; Kenwood KD-44R (DD Turntable); and a pair of either POLK 19" or Infinity Sterling SS2003 speakers. Other than my DUAL 1219 turntable, I haven't bought used equipment previously. Any suggestions/opinions on above items would be most appreciated.

What you mentioned above is all decent kit. It's not fancy or expensive and brings a good bang for the listening buck until he gets more in tune with what he wants to upgrade later (phono cartridge, speakers, etc). I had a pair of Infinity Sterling's that were decent sounding but as an older guy, knew the older 70's-80's models were the golden era for Infinity, with the Newer Renaissance speakers being absolutely fantastic (but expensive and hard to find since hardly anybody sells them once they hear them).
Nikko equipment is also decent sounding is my experience.

Good starter system, should sound nice and be upgradeable any piece at a time. What size room and how loud the listening needs to be will determine if the speakers and amp are best for that situation. I don't think high volume and a big room would work best but a regular room would be fine.
Him, nothing. He's just be purchasing at tag sales, etc. in the hopes of me purchasing a system for him as an XMAS gift.
Right. At 23, and for the foreseeable future, it will most likely be small rooms, in small apartments.
