Help me decide...

I recently have gotten back into vinyl. I have a Pioneer PL-15ii that I'm running through a Marantz 2230. Right now I'm playing through a pair of Cerwin Vega D1s. I bought the D1s because my first set of speakers was CV and the nostalgia bug bit me. I'm thinking of upgrading. I've got a line on a pair of Dynaco a25s for around $200-250. I've read that the a25s are a good match for the 2230. Are they worth test price? Is the difference in sound that noticeable? Thanks for the help.

There is a big difference in sound but I don't know the sound of CV other than loud. The A25 was the most accurate speaker Consumer Reports measured when they tested them in the early-mid-70s and that lead to half a million of them being sold to folks that were comfortable buying a recommended speaker instead of listening and buying what they like.

Because of the resurgence in vintage, these speakers are very popluar now and they do sound good in a smaller room, I have them in a 2nd bedroom and happy with the sound, driving them with a late Citation stack of solid state power. They have good bass for their size and roll off just a bit early but the sound is enjoyable. They do need more power than the D1 I expect as CVs were generally very sensitivity.

Can't talk price in this forum need to ask value questions in Dollars and Sense forum but the A25 can be found for anywhere from free to about 275 a pair. They sell for anywhere in that range. Search that forum for the A25 and read all about the pricing. It is all over the map.
 
Well it looks like you got toad to the buck and change forum where we can talk price. For the money you mention they should be in extremely nice condition. Wood in great shape and grilles you can enjoy looking at. Emblems would be nice to have at that ask. They do sound nice and should clean up well if they need a bit of work but that should be done at that price point. I know mine are 200 buck boxes today but they got a lot of work, new grille frames and cloth as well as cabinet refresh, no emblems, though.

A-25's are a better speaker than I thought they were.

About a month ago I bought a banged up pair, made them pretty and sold them to a vintage audio shop. I figured they'd be flipped for about the price of that pair in this thresd's ad and realize that store a hundred or hundred and fifty dollar profit.

But they're still there and hooked up front and centre in the store's system. Amplification and signal source has changed in the intervening time but always crazy good. Most recently Carver tube mono blocks and a high end Luxman table I did not know existed. Despite on hand speaker alternatives with lofty price tags, the owner says the Dynaco's are just too good.

He was surprised and impressed. And that surprised me considering what else he has there.
