I should clarify that a 604 duplex motor is really all it's own driver, the HF section uses the same magnet slug, diaphragm, and magnetic return pot as an 802 compression driver. However, it does not have a front plate and in fact uses the return pot of the 515 type motor as it's front plate. Also, the throat is of a different flare rate than an 802 and extends nearly 4 full inches beyond where an 802 throat would terminate.

I'm afraid when i get to the end of my current journey the only Altec horns i'll have are those protruding from the center of a large cone.

You're in good company. There's a lot of folks who take a liking to that sound.

Kind of sad... you mean I'm at the end of the journey? But wait there's tweaking and amplifiers.. and cables and preamps and sources to play with....

Physical space and portability are my current "new frontier" as a relocation and even possible migration are in my foreseeable future. ................. and yes, there is some other source gear that i'm wanting to try as well as a larger pair of Westlakes.

It won't break my heart if i'm only half successful paring down the Altecs. After all, they all have their merits that make them easy to live with.

yup. Just loaned out my 846A Valencias to a local fleapower hifi buff (who was using AR-3a speakers with an SE 45 amp?!) and took advantage of my son's being home for Thanksgiving to move the 878A Santiagos downstairs.

He'll look at his ARs differently after the Vals.
