Help me understand the need/desire for a "bedroom system"

Hi all ... I have a few systems - more than one in the same room, even. Until recently, there were three in the living room, alone. However, I have never, ever felt the need or desire to put a system in my bedroom. There are really only a few things I do in my bedroom, and none of them involves listening to music: I am either sleeping (and I prefer quiet), sometimes reading (in bed or in my reading chair) and I still prefer quiet, and if romance is in the air, a sound system is the absolute furthest thing from my mind.

I don't (and won't) have a TV in there and my clock/radio provides the news, occasional evening Jazz, or the last few innings. It plays CDs, but I honestly cannot remember the last time I played a CD on it.

So what's up with all the "bedroom systems"? :scratch2:

(And I "get it" if you are young, or particularly frugal, and your room is all that you have. What I am talking about are the many folks who have a living room system, a "man-cave" system, a home-theatre system, a garage/workshop system, but also have a bedroom system. I "get" all of them but the bedroom system.)

While I don't currently have a bedroom system, I used to have one as a bachelor. I loved to read my bedtime book with some background music.

I wouldn't mind having a system now but I don't think I can play it at bedtime anymore.

There are few things I enjoy more than falling asleep to music. But I also have a projector screen in my bedroom which needs a connected sound system, so I admit that my situation is a bit irregular. Its fun, though. And watching movies on a 10' screen in bed is fun, if a bit over the top.

I have about 2 1/2 rooms here to play with, so I have to make some rooms pull double duty.

I occasionally have guests, and often their schedules are different than mine. Therefore, rather than disturbing them, I can go to the bedroom and listen quietly. I also have a small setup in the guest bedroom for the same reason. I have found that the living room seems to invite normal listening volumes, & conversation levels, whereas a bedroom seems to usually dictate rather lower levels, and there is less disturbance. Also, there might be people sleeping in all bedrooms, and the living room, as well as anywhere else they can throw a sleeping bag. A bedroom can sometimes be the only place I am able to listen late at night.

Well, I guess it's because I like listening to music in our bedroom. We have 3 kids and they often have the other listening space in the house occupied, particularly when they have friends over.

Our bedroom is a little of everything, but mostly it's what we want it to be - our space.

I put on a Josh Groban CD one night for the wife. I no longer have any doubt regarding the value of a Bedroom System.....:thmbsp:

When I give my reason I suspect I'll be speaking on behalf of many other AKers as well.....
Plain and simple...I love music. I love to make it and listen to it (well, with the exception of a healthy dose of talk radio when driving around) and when I'm listening I like it to sound GOOD. I fold laundry in the bedroom just so I can fire up the Sansui 8080 and TimeFrame 600's. Any time I'm doing anything on that side of the house I have a great system to keep music in the air. I'd much rather have music providing background stimulation rather than a TV....so I make sure every living area of the house has a good system....especially MY BEDROOM! Oh, and my lady DEMANDS music when in the bedroom. I wouldn't dare attempt to enhance the mood with a clock radio, boombox, or half-ass shelf system. I mean, she likes big speakers too and I wouldn't want to disappoint!

1) Music during sex is good. ("Sex, drugs, rock-n-roll" used to be the war cry. The "Holy Three" according to "The Childs Garden of Grass" are "Listening to
Music, Eating Food and Making Love")
2) I use a timer and fall asleep to low music on my favorite FM station and wake up to it as well when I am alone. The wife likes TV if the mood isn't right.

doesn't seem all that hard to understand to me - people like to listen to music in their bedroom. Believe it or not, some people also actually like to have music on when playing with the "missus" also...
I have a harder time understanding 3 systems in one room.....but that's just me

Or to use the unused gear you have laying around. And some ladies like to have tunes on when they uh, sleep.

What he said about a lady friend "sleeping" over. Plus, it's one (1) system. There's only one system in my listening room. I've got no others, just those two.

While I definitely fit in the "young and its where I keep all my things" category I would never be without a small system in my bedroom. I always fall asleep with music playing, to the point of having a small system (t-amp, ipod and small speakers) when I travel.

I have very slight tinnitus and being somewhat out in the country there isn't enough noise to mask it while I fall asleep. I have never liked white noise for falling asleep either.

+1:thmbsp: I enjoy the bedroom system. If I'm kicked back reading a magazine, on goes a record. Falling asleep listening to music is very pleasurable. But, I also have a TV in the bedroom:yes:

I like to kick back and read AK on the laptop whilst listening to some tunes in bed. The wife likes relaxing music to sleep to. I keep that on after listening to what I want to. I have a Sui 1000x receiver hooked to some Sui SP-1000's and a Technics TT and a Ipod with streaming radio. The streaming radio is awesome for any type of music I want to chill with and it is has a relaxation channel that helps keep us asleep.

Growing up, my first system was in my room, when I went to college, put a bigger one in my dorm, and then an even bigger one in the bedroom of my first apartment. Moving in with my girlfriend, I have maintained the bedroom system, although on a slightly smaller scale than in the past. I really enjoy falling asleep to music and my girlfriend's office is at one end of the bedroom; since she spends so much time in there, having a stereo is necessary.

The setup is quite basic; a TT, a Sony ES receiver and CDP, an AirPort Express and a pair of Dynaudio Audience 42s. It doesn't take up that much space and it sounds quite nice in the bedroom. Admittedly, the TT and CDP don't get a lot of use these days, but they do come in handy from time to time.

I also don't understand the merits of having three systems in the same room, as I like to divide my listening areas. I prefer to have a dedicated system for my TV, another for straight up music/primary listening, followed by my bedroom system. But I guess everyone's different!

Our space!
