Help, My Pioneer PD-M90X CD Player Won't Play Some CD's

I have a beautiful Pioneer PD-M90X 1987 cd player that is finicky about which cd's it will play. I received a Lee Michaels cd for Christmas and the M90X won't play it.

The Lee Michaels cd plays just fine on two other Pioneer cd players I have. One is a PD-M530 1987 and the other is a PD-M670 1986.

Some cd's that I have burned will play on the M90X and other cd's I've burned won't play on the M90X. However those same cd's will play just fine on the M530 and the M670.

I took the M90X into a repair shop. They said they cleaned it and played 15 different cds and they all played just fine. I took the Lee Michaels cd in for them to try and they had the same results I had, the M90X won't play it. They tried playing the Lee Michaels cd in several other units they had and it played just fine.

Any ideas about what's going on? Can it be repaired? The shop I took it to seems to be done with it. They gave me an explanation about the M90X not being SACD compatible but after reading up on that I don't think compatibility is the problem. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Look into Laser Adjustment. There is a small variable resistor on the flat cable near the laser in my PD-M600 and others of that era that once position is noted, vr deoxited and cleaned then reset have fixed a number of Pioneer CDP/C machines.

On my unit it adjusted whether the unit worked or not.

haven't jumped into the SM to try to figure it out as I don't have the SM for my unit. It is on the bronze/orange colored ribbon cable and is like a small screw sticking through the cable. Videos show it. Since you know the original position of the control and return to that position when done cleaning, the change in the setting should be small enough to not upset things too much. Maybe laser power or something.

I have the SM for the unit. I'll dig it out and give it a look see. I put the unit back in my rack so now i need to unstack it to wiggle the vr.
