I am in college at NC state and have made what I hope to be my first vintage find. It it located in Charlotte, however, I live in Raleigh and am unable to pick it up. Seller is willing to hold it but only for tonight. I will give you $20 to pick it up and I have a friend going to Charlotte in 2 weeks who can pick it up from you. PM me if you are willing to help out a newcomer to vintage audio and boost your own audio karma!

"What is it?"
Don't you have to travel to New Mexico to see "it"?
I couldn't believe my parents drove right by the place without stopping.

Being a lifelong resident of New Mexico, I have no idea what it is you are talking about..:screwy:

Where were the billboards that said "What is it?" every half mile for 30 miles or so? It was one of these middle of nowhere jackalope type tourist traps IIRC. Maybe it was in west Texas or Arizona?

I know what it is.

There are signs on I-95 before you get to South of the Border (SC/NC state line) like you are describing. One about every 100 yards it seems. Along 15/501 as well.

The Thing, on the AZ/NM border on I-40?

When I was a kid I rode with my grandparents in a truck from California to New Mexico. I saw the signs and wanted to go see the thing. We did. I will tell you what it was after Wolfmother tells us what he bought.

Just playin. It was a mummy. It had a mummy baby with it too. I have a picture of it somewhere. I may just look for it.

Having previously lived in NM and AZ; and having started going cross-country by car in the 60s each summer as a kid, I first saw The Thing many years ago. Then I ended up taking my kids to it years later in the '80s and '90s. (We've got family on both sides of the U.S.)

Used to drive my dad (and then me) crazy -- because any kid will read those countdown billboards: "The Thing! 50 Miles!; The Think, 49 Miles!; The Thing, 48 Miles!"

Or "Akela Flats! Too Mean To Die!" (my favorite in NM outside Las Cruces).

Stuckey's roadside joints did the same practice. Pecan Rolls! 50 Miles! = "Dad, can we stop at Stuckey's? Look dad, Stuckey's 45 Miles!" No wonder my mom kept sharp objects away from him when we took those trips.
