Help Needed -- EICO Wood Cases WE-72 and WE-73

I am seeking an original wood case for an EICO Classic Model 2536 receiver. I’m trying to figure out the difference between the EICO WE-72 wood cabinet and the WE-73 wood cabinet.

I have an old brochure of the EICO Classic Series (about year 1964 or 1965). In a footnote is APPEARS to indicate that the WE-72 wood cabinet is for the 2036, 2050, 2200, 2510 and other models. Further, it APPEARS to indicate that the WE-73 wood cabinet is for the 2536 receiver and 2716 receiver.

The stated dimensions of the 2536 receiver are 5-5/8 x 15-7/8 x 13-5/8.
The stated dimensions of the 2080 integrated amp are 5-5/8 x 15-7/8 x 13-5/8.

The brochure does NOT state which wood case fits the 2080 integrated amp. Someone stated that he has a wood case that originally held a 2080 amplifier. It is not known for sure what the case model number is. This would seem a matter of simple assumption --- but it is not, and the brochure is not helpful.

Yes, the brochure gives the same chassis dimensions for the 2536 and 2080, but does not list the 2080 as fitting the WE-72 or WE-73 case. My concern is possibly different faceplate dimensions and thus different wood cases.

Can anyone provide guidance here? Maybe you have a 2536 receiver or 2080 amp with original wood case, and the wood case has a model number on the bottom.

I've got (what I'm pretty sure is )a 2080 case, but I'm not seeing any identifying info.

Outer dimensions = 17" x 13-3/4" x 6-1/8"

Inner (approximate = 16" x 13-3/8* x 5-1/8"

*there is a lip that is < 1/2" that I believe protrudes in front of the faceplate)

There's a 2536 on auction on the big auction site that has a wood case. The seller shows a page from a vintage catalog for the 2136; it says "order case below."catalog.jpg

Maybe the seller can find the 2080 in that catalog. No affiliation! Please PM me if you need the listing. Member mhardy6647 is very knowledgeable and seems to have a lot of these old catalogs. You might want to contact him.

This lists the same Allied Part number, 72 U 603 MX, for the 2080 amplifier and the 2200 tuner, so the WE-72 that fits the 2200 should also fit the 2080. That suggests that the 2080 cabinet available to you is not the WE-73 you want for your 2536. Bummer!
 
If the power rating was higher than the earlier models, taller tubes or transformers may have needed more clearance or more ventilation.
 
Hello, I'm the OP (original poster).

I looked into this matter quite a while ago. My final conclusion was that although the given dimensions were the same, the WE-73 wood cabinet is needed for the 2536 receiver due to a faceplate-fit issue. I've never had the two wood cases and the 2536 receiver for direct comparison and testing; my conclusion derived from careful review of product literature, catalog listings and the like.

Of course, with a sledge hammer and sharp chisel one might get the 2536 receiver to fit into the WE-72 wood case, but I'll pass on that for now.

In the meantime, I would still like to purchase an Eico 2536 with WE-73 wood case (but not the one currently on the bay).

It lists the size for the 2536 as 5-5/8 x 15-7/8 x 13-5/8. It does not list a wood enclosure but offers metal enclosure E-12 for the 2536.

The 2200 above it is listed as 5-5/8 x 15-7/8 x 11-5/8 so 2" less deep. The metal enclosure offered is E-11, listed under the 2050 as fitting the 2036, 2050 and 2200.

Since the metal enclosures are different it makes sense that the wooden ones would be also. I hope this helps!
 
The Allied Radio catalog above also lists the depth of the 2200 as 11 5/8 and the 2080 as 13 5/8.

I have an EICO High Fidelity Products Line catalog (more of a brochure), covering the Classic Series, ST Series and Standard Series. What we are discussing here of course are part of the Classic Series.

Forget about the Model 2200; not relevant.

The 2080 is an 80-watt stereo amplifier. The dimensions of the amplifier are stated as: 5-5/8" H x 15-7/8" W x 13-5/8" deep.

The 2536 is a stereo receiver. The dimensions of the receiver are stated as: 5-5/8" H x 15-7/8" W x 13-5/8" deep. This is exactly the same as the Model 2080 amplifier.

NOTE: These dimensions are for the unit, not the wood or metal case.

Only in a footnote does the brochure state the following:
Cabinets and Covers Optional: Walnut WE-73, $19.95 . . . Walnut Cabinet WE-72, $19.95

Nowhere (repeat: nowhere) does the EICO brochure specifically state which wood cabinet goes with which component model.

However, as noted in an earlier post, there is an EICO magazine advertisement that specifically states that the 2536 receiver takes the WE-73 wood cabinet.

Ok, since the size of the 2536 component receiver is the same size as the 2080 component amplifier, one might guess that they would take the same wood cabinet. But clues from elsewhere indicate that the Model 2080 amplifier takes the WE-72 wood case. And that is the conundrum: how do the WE-72 and WE-73 wood cabinets differ if the same-size component chassis is intended for each? One guess: the size or shape of the faceplates on the 2080 amp. and 2536 receiver differ.
