Help needed - NR1604 just died

Hello - I'm a new member and am hoping this very knowledgeable board might be able to help me sort out my dead NR1604.

So a couple weeks ago the receiver failed to turn on and I noticed the standby power light was out. I unplugged the power cord and then when I plugged it back in, I heard a bit of electrical crackling in the rear of the unit. But it seemed to help whatever the issue was, because the unit came back to life.

Fast forward to where it is now completely dead. I unplugged everything, took the cover off, and the fuses still seem intact. As an experiment I plugged the power cable back in and before I could even touch the power switch, it crackled and shot off a spark inside the rear right corner of the box - on the backside of where the power cord socket internally connects to the board.

I've been reading about various power switch problems in this forum - is this what that kind of failure looks like? Or is it more likely a short in the power socket? Or something else?

Would greatly appreciate any guidance on how to diagnose this further and whether there might be a simple fix.

Seems to me like a fault in or near the power socket in the amp. Should be an easy repair, a visual inspection will likely reveal the problem.

Thanks! I'm not entirely sure what to look for beyond scorching, but I tried to take pix of the power socket and the backside of the board where it connects.

It looks ok to me - do you see anything out of order?

Any idea if a power socket replacement is pretty straightforward? Is the only connection to the board those two solder points?

If it's easy, does anyone have the part number for the socket?

Have a look at the solder joints, wiggle the socket and see it anything moves (it shouldn't)

Also suspect is the plug did you try another cord?

Looks like an IEC cord - these often need a lot more force to insert than you would think. Make sure it's going all the way in, the squared off part should be flush or almost flush to the socket face.

Thanks again for your help. The power cord plug does wiggle a little inside the socket, even when pushed all the way in. But it's always done that. I did notice earlier that the crackling occurs when I wiggle the plug inside the socket. But the socket itself doesn't wiggle relative to its connection on the board.

Yep, I've tried two different power cords and had the same issue. I will see if I have one lying around with a slightly larger plug, so it doesn't wiggle inside the socket.

UPDATE: I tried a couple more cables and found one that wiggles less. No crackling or sparks when I plugged it in, but no life either. Standby light still dead.
