Help Needed: Repairing Sony CDP-970 CD Player

Hello All,

I have recently picked up a seemingly very nice 1988 Sony CDP-970 CD Player, and appear to have hit a snag attempting to repair it.

The issue is that when I insert a disc, the mechanism that lifts the motor up to spin the disk does not come up all the way. Taking off the top clamp and lifting up the metal frame on which the motor is mounted, and then letting go and inserting a disk, will often bring the motor up fully on the next try, but it will fail on subsequent attempts.

The motor itself is spinning fine, and the laser seems clean - the player can read the TOC when the motor rises up fully.

I have read Dr. Audio's well-written explanation on diagnosing CD Player issues, but I do not know how to move forward with this faulty pickup.

Any help would be well-appreciated!

What mech is it,

If it's ksl213c or similar remove the four sprung screws on the underside, lower the plate check nothing is pinched, there's soft rubber sleeves check they're all good then reassemble don't loose the location as the springs vary, has it had a new laser recently.
There's a rotary ramp, the carriage has a peg which sits in the rotor and is lifted up or down, check it's fully turning and that the peg is ok. See my post on the Rotel 951.
