Help needed with Technics ST-CA1080

Hi All,

I am new here and hope someone will be able to help me or prepare me mentally for the service bill.
Just purchased a full Technics 1080 system second hand on ebay. It did arrive yesterday to my parent's house. I have unpacked it and checked with a CD, everything was fine. I came home and hooked up only the pre and power amp to the notebook, listening to it as I write this. However the volume control is not functioning correctly now. If I turn the knob the display shows that you're changing the volume up or down, but the actual volume does not change. Does not matter if turn it slowly or fast or use the remote. Turning it up or down a lot gives sudden volume changes, mainly being too loud or too quiet.
Anybody had the same issue with 1060/1080 system, or any other Technics system?

hi, i'm having EXACTLY the same problem! i have two of these systems (don't ask why). one day they both decided to break, but with the same issue! the volume jumps VERY wildly when i turn it up. for example, they'll be no sound output even when i turn it to -20db, but when i reach -18db it'll suddenly start blaring at me. same problem exists when turning it down. it'll play full volume until the sound is turned to the minimum. it's strange that this has occured on two systems at the same time! did you come across a fix?! :dunno:
 
Sometimes the amp's output relay doesn't pass signal until it's a high enough signal. This is caused by failing capacitors in the output protection circuits. Just a thought.

What is the Technics 1080 system?
 
Hello. I am actually having the same issue on my recently aquired 1080 system.
I don't think it is the pots that are fouled either. I have two of these systems and swapped the face pcbs with the mainboards and the problem still persisted.
That leads me to believe that it is somewhere on the mainboard that is causing the problem.....but where???
 
Fix for it

the problem is in the digital volume control IC. You will find it in the tuner module with ic model LC7536 30 pin circuit.

I know 5 years later the answer but better than never :yes:

Replacing the LC7536 30 pin IC did the job for me as well! Many thanks. Just writing this so people get a feeling about thd success rate. Cheers!

Welcome to AK. This thread is over 12 years old, and the poster who identified the fix hasn't logged into AK in over a year, so don't be too disappointed if none of the previous participants reply.

I imagine you've googled LC7536? It doesn't look like there are any top-tier suppliers, which is not too surprising. But I don't think you have to worry about counterfeits with this part, so I think the supplier's character might be less important than it would be with a more common part.

I saw it is an old thread, but I wanted to test my luck. I googled LC7536 without luck, but I went to eBay, found some parts, and already ordered one. I hope that will fix the issue for me, too.
 
Hey everyone,
Replacing the LC7536 part generated a positive impact. However, the tuner still turns off automatically, displaying the F61 error if I reach -16dB in volume.
So, I want to thank everyone who contributed to this thread, it really helped. Even though it's not perfect, it is usable and gives me time to look for a replacement.
