Help Needed With Yamaha CR-2040

Hello Merrylander,

My name is Dave/ryanclan6 & I'm touching base regarding a Yamaha CR-2040 that I've had for a few years (since 2007). The previous owner told me that you had done a complete restoration & re-veneer on the unit
(probably 2006/2007). I had also purchased a Yamaha CR-3020 that I used as my centerpiece unit and kept the CR-2040 in storage as a back-up. . I've sold the 3020 and brought the 2040 out of storage. I'm passing on the 2040 to my son to start him up with analog sound (CR-2040, Bose 901 Series 1 w/equalizer & a Pioneer PL-50 player).
The 2040 was kept in a heat-controlled area (living room) in a glass enclosed entertainment center.
I hooked up the 2040 to give it a test run and found that it would play for about 8-10 minutes then cut out.
The units 'cutting out' only affected the sound output. Lights, dials, etc. all remained 'on'.

I understand that you've stopped working on Yamaha units but wondering in you'd take a look at this particular unit.
If not is there any recommendations that you feel comfortable with of a tech in the Seattle area?

I appreciate any thoughts you may have on the subject.

When it cut out. Did you here a relay " click" ?
 
Best guess is bad solder connection or a failing component when the unit heats up.The relay driver on these units have been problematic in the past.
 
Hi Dave,

I’m looking at purchasing a cr 2040 and would like a qualified tech check it out. I live in central Oregon but travel to Seattle often.
Did you learn of any Yamaha techs in the Seattle area?

I an old school guy that purchased my first receiver in 1981 Yamaha CR 1040. I loved it. It finally went dark on me 15 years later and the store I bought it from said that it couldn't be repaired. I still have my JBL L40 speakers and Technics SL 220 phono that I bought at the same time. I'm finally have time to seriously listen to my vinyl once again and looking to upgrade my components. I recently purchased a pair of JBL 4312. Like I said in my earlier post I am very interested in the 2040, however, after some extensive research it appears that these units have their weakness and it is important to have a reliable technician that can repair them properly. My current listening room 11X14. Is the 2040 no powerful for this room size? would the 2020 be better suited?

Check the offset trimpots!

I have 2040 too, and some time ago the offset trimmer cut off the contact, and in the blink of an eye burned another channel of the output transistors!
And they are really hard to find in the original!

I think it would be best for you to replace those trimmers immediately before damage.
Maybe it would be best not to adjust those old trimmers at all. especially with the power on.




I replaced the burned output transistors with newer ones.
2SB700a ---> 2SA1295 and 2SD736a ---> 2SC3264 and again, it works very fine.
And of course, I replace all trimpots before swiching power on.

And yet that in many places people writes that CR-2040 sounds better than CR-2020.
