Help no clue, failing Pioneer stereo receiver! Please advise

Background: The Pioneer stereo receiver is about five years old. Just moved into a new house, had ceiling surround installed, plus a center channel speaker about a year ago. Everything goes thru the receiver, cable, xbox, playstation, etc. In the last few month the receiver has stopped transmitting sound intermittently. Well be watching TV or a movie and the sound just stops. Restarting the receiver, so that the 'thunk' power sound activates usually restarts the sound. Now, nothing. If I cycle thru signal select all the way back to HDMI ususally resets it, but only temporarily. Sometimes, the speakers cycle through with a static popping noise, through all five of them, before they all stop working. It is not the source as I have with problem with both the xbox and the cable, and it is not something physically wrong with the ceiling speakers, as the center channel cable is accessible and not in the wall. I know NOTHING about stereos, only that I know I don't want to have to replace it. Is it salvageable? Help!

go back to basics ..one thing connected for input and speakers which you should check wiring first as it happens .
