HELP PLEASE Sony TC-K661S

Hello everyone
I'm a complete novice with tech repair but eager to learn, I've recently inherited a Sony TC-K661S that's been sat in a loft for a few years, I've hoovered out a huge buildup of dust and given the inside (of the bit where the tape goes in) a wipe round with isopropyl.

I've tested it, and it will fast forward & rewind, but when you press play it'll make a whirring sound (like the motor to twist the reels is running) - AND you can see them moving in the little window for a few seconds, then it stops. No sound.

I've had a bit of a google tonight and found this similar question.
https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/cassette-deck-will-ff-rewind-but-not-play.731722/

My deck has soft touch buttons, and comparing it to a much cheaper tape deck we have (with clunky buttons) I think maybe a gear has gone to move the bits that move the tape along at the bottom upwards (but I could be dead wrong), I can spin the capstan shaft & the rubber roller thing under it.

I have no idea where to start, can anyone please help point me in the right direction?

Thanks so much in advance!
