Help: Polk Monitor 7s sound issues

"as there is no indication on the speaker, do you know during what period they were manufactured"

Hopefully these will help you out

Thank you for the links!!! You know, I think I will be keeping my Monitor 7s for a good bit longer. I just love the sound, and they will be even better once I get the other speaker fixed.

I've still got my Monitor 5s that I bought new in '91 or so. I agree that this family of Polk speakers is great. I believe you'll enjoy them all the more when they've been repaired.

Very nice of so many of you willing to help her. Natasha, nice to hear that you're passionate about great sound.

Thank you :) Yes it is extremely nice that many want to help. I am very passionate about great sound, and do as much as I can on my budget. But hey.. My favorite music is late 60s through mid 80s Rock and Roll (perhaps strange since I am a mid-80s girl myself ;) ) Listening to some Billy Idol right now... L.A. Woman (but not very loud).

Did you ever do the push test to make sure the driver moves freely? A stuck mid woofer can still make sound so we need to check for free movement. If the mid woofer moves freely with no rubbing of any kind we can then move to the crossover.

There are two different crossover drawings for the M7 with the SL-2000 so we need to figure out which ones you have.

You will have to remove the passive radiator from the cabinet having issues. There will be a date code on the back. We need to know the date. With the radiator removed you will be able to see the crossover.

There will be a polyswitch that can be prone to failure if the speakers had been driven hard in their life before meeeting you. There is also a sand cast resistor we need to see. If you could take and post an image of the crossover it would be helpful.

Hi Steve,
I did push on the driver. Everything seems to be in order there. I'm going to take the passive radiator out as soon as possible. I don't think these speakers have seen a rough life as they are in great shape externally, but perhaps. Thank you again for helping me out. :)

As I am only a couple-three hours up I-35, I also would do the soldering for you. If you ever come to Norman for any reason, well, that is one more. I'm sure you and my wife would get on famously.

However, Steve knows that model speaker better than I... looks like you're in good hands.

Hi there... that is so Sweet of you!!! :D My father-in-law has a ranch just south of Wichita Falls near Henrietta. Norman isn't all that far. Besides, it would give me an excuse to go to my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant ever, Carlotta's Cantina (they changed the name recently, but the place is exactly the same) I am going to wait until my husband gets back from his business trip on Wednesday afternoon to move the speakers as I hurt shoulder the other day and have a hard time lifting things. I know, don't laugh, 30 pounds isn't all that much, but it's a good bit for me. You and Steve would probably get on well too. He is a sweet guy, if I can ever get him to stop talking about flying. ;)

PM me if we can help.

Why not go in the back.

She could. The crossover is a snug fit and susceptable to damage so my preference is to go in through the radiator. If the bottom driver were wired I might do it differently.

I would take Musichal up on his offer to solder for you since you are in his area at times. If the timeframes do not work out you are welcome to send them to me.

Regardless of how you go there are a few things that must be done before you can do anything else.

First thing on my list with any vintage Polks are midwoofer magnets. I still use JB Weld to secure the magnets because I have some but the current adhesive of choice is lock tite powergrab. If you have to buy something for the job anyway get the powergrab and do the interior cabinet seams to close any potential air leaks and to tighten up the cabinets in general.

You need to dampen the driver baskets. The midwoofer and radiator have stamped steel baskets that ring like bells. The common fix is to cut pieces of Dynamat extreme to place on the midwoofer and radiator baskets to deaden vibrations. This makes a difference that can be heard instantly.

Once we know the dates we can go into the options for the crossovers.

I'm batting24-0 with magnet not shift so far.

Great record and nice to meet another vintage Polk nut. I could not afford them back in the mid 70's when I first heard them so am compensating for it now. In todays market I think they can be a great value. I have less than $300 in my daily driver M7 Series II's counting new tweeters and crossovers.

I have had three failures so tend to be anal about securing magnets. I had one that worked perfectly shift as I was pushing on it to break a moretite bond. There is a guy at the Polk forum who offers an exchange service for magnet shifted drivers. I now keep spares on hand just incase.

I would hate to see her lose a driver trying to move them when the fix does not take long.

Got my third pair of sda 2's (bit of a Craigslist birdbrain) for $75 and they were minty. Tried to TL 2A's when the correct thing to do was install 2b crossovers into 2A then proceed. Cabs took a nosedive with the 2b. I then moved and removed all drivers from the 3 pairs and dumped them in the garbage. My local Craigslist would require I list each pair at $20 it's so bad.

I have a pair of Kef 105.2 where I have to rotate the woofers once a year to avoid coil rub. Bob has a good idea there.

Thank you all with the good, sound advise for fixing my speaker....

I had my husband help me move the things to his workbench and after we removed the 6.5" driver, we noticed that there had been some repair made on the wiring in the past at some point, and that this "repair" not done correctly (or had failed over time) and was loose. My husband redid the connection for me. The speaker appears to be properly working again. I'm happy again with my Monitor 7s. Decided to give them a listen... playing "Bat out of Hell" right now, in honor of Meatloaf who fell ill yesterday in Canada during a show.
