Help! screeching sound when playing tapes.

Hello Audio Karma Forum,

I am in need of some help. I am new to cassettes and music as a whole. I recently purchased a tape deck (Yamaha KX-332) in standard used condition and it works fine until when I was recording, I now hear a loud screeching noise that fades in and out.

I have diagnosed the problem as the deck itself, and not the tapes as it made the noise with all of my cassettes I tested it with. The music will still play, nothing showing a loud noise comes up on the meters.

If I could get some insight on what I could do, that would be much appreciated. I read on some other forums that "Contact Cleaner" could do the trick, but since I'm new to this stuff I don't want to have to open up the deck.

is the squealing coming through the speakers? If so are the tapes TDK? If so it's the tapes and why I abandoned the brand 45yrs ago.

The squealing is coming from the left deck, not the speakers. The brand of tape I am using is the Walmart brand "Onn". May not have been the best choice of tape to record with, but it's the only one I could find in store.

ah, so a dual well deck, don't have any, no issues with the other deck? Is the left deck the "main" deck? One thing I like about the Tascam 302 both decks are identical.

Likely a bearing in need of lubrication. Google "Yamaha KX-332 squeal" (without quotation marks). Lots of old cassette decks have this issue.
