Help - Sony CDP 508esd Tray Not Opening!

I need some help from anyone who has repaired or serviced older Sony CD players. I have a CDP-508esd and the tray would intermittently stick or when opening and closing. So, being a novice but having read many threads at AK, I ordered a replacement belt. Well, I got the belt replaced with some difficulty, and now when I fire it up, the tray moves back into closed position but will not open...

The 508esd has a tray in which the laser, etc drops down before the tray slides out. For some reason this function now doesnt work. It isnt dropping down to allow the tray to come out. Really nothing happens at all when I push the open button, I dont even hear the little gears trying to move or anything! I am pretty stumped and hope it didnt end of breaking something else in the process of the belt replacement.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Ensure that the new belt is not too tight. If it is, it will prevent the motor from spinning. I just had this problem with a CDP-670, which has a similar drop-down laser mechanism. The old belt was mis-shaped, so I thought I'd replace it. I got a belt that was just slightly smaller in circumference, but it turns out it was too small (too tight) and kept the motor from turning. I was in a bind, so I took the old belt and reinstalled it making sure to put the "flat" spot on the larger sprocket. It worked like a charm and the player is now making sweet music for me again!

You got the drawer timing wrong. The gear that operates the drawer also raises the mechanism. In order to do this, there is a flat spot in the gear with no teeth. When the drawer is fully in, it is supposed to hit the flat spot, so the gear can continue to turn to raise the mech. It's easy to fix the timing.
1. Allow the drawer to open on it's own.
2. Shut the power off.
3. Gently push the drawer all the way in.
4. While holding the drawer in, turn the power on.
The mech should now rise. If this doesn't work, the timing is farther off and it will be necessary to remove the drawer or the gear if you can get to it.

Is there an in/out adjustment screw on the bottom of the player? If so, you can adjust the drawer timing with it. I had to do this with mine.

Those are not for adjusting the drawer timing. I have seen them mostly on 5 disc players and they are for manually opening / closing the drawer. When you did that you may have happened to get the timing back to normal.

Thanks Dunhill & Dr. Audio. I will have to look at everything again and tinker some more. To be clear, the tray does close properly when powered on, so the portion with the laser etc does move back into the upper position. It will not move into the lowered position for some reason. This still could be due to tray timing I would suppose and maybe even the band?

Some older units had 2 belts, one for the drawer and one for the mechanism. It could be that or the timing might not be right.

Yesterday I had the same issue while replacing the belt on a Sony CDP-970 - the CD tray was closing in and laser was focusing, but the CD tray would not open/come out at all, because the laser tray did not come down.
In my case it turned out, that I accidentally had bent a little bit the switch for sensing the opened tray, so the signal was always giving tray "opened". :) This indeed had an impact on the motor control so the motor did not turn at all for opening and therefore the laser tray did not come down. After bending back the switch so it is straight vertical when tray closed, helped in my case.
Visually the switch was alright, but the switch indeed was bent a little bit to the middle and not straight vertical when closed. I did found out this issue by accidentally pulling out half of the flat cable for the motor, so only + and - were in and the signals from the switches were not in. In that case, the CD tray was coming in and out the whole time on its own. Hope this helps someone else.
