HELP! (Technics SL-D2)

Hi Guys. You've been very kind and helpful to a TT noob so I thought I'd seek more help. I just got my Technics SL-D2 and am having some trouble with the balance weight and stylus pressure. The owner's manual says I need to adjust the horizontal zero balance, etc. and I am getting lost :pity:. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As boreas suggests. Watch the turntable basics video. To set vertical tracking force (VTF) on the D2 is like every other basic setup. Balance the arm then rotate weight to appropriate amount. However, I always recommend getting a cheap digital scale to ensure accuracy.
 
Yes, definitely an AT. The model # on AT carts is always printed on the top and you won't be able to see it unless you remove it from the headshell. Some others might recognize the model.

Anyway, the majority of cartridges will be fine in the 1.5 to 2 gram area, so maybe just try for the middle of that range, around 1.75 +/-. You are typically better off erring a bit to the high side than too low. The extra pressure is better than mistracking with too light a pressure.
 
Track it at around 1.5 to 1.75 if you have any problems with it tracking then move it to 2 grams but the other two should be Ok

Not sure which model of Audio Technica cartridge and or stylus you actually have.

A pretty "safe" range would be 1.5 gram for now (until you have established positive ID of the cartridge/stylus).

but remember after you zero balance the arm you have to hold the counter weight in place and bring the dial to zero. Then you can adjust the tracking force.
 
I'm doing this from my phone so the photo isn't all that clear but the plastic piece on the bottom that holds the needle looks green, right? If it is, your stylus is an ATS11E. It should track at 2 to 3 grams.
