Help to choose reciever

Hello, im thinking to buy my first vintage reciever.
its hard to choose, so maybe someone will give me advice. I use it for listining radio, aux from tv, and phono in future. Ingerested more in sound quality than in power.

Some recievers near me for sale that im interested:

JVC R-S5
TECHINIC SA-404
KENWOOD KR-3090
SONY STR-6050(i realy like the look but i read that they dont have fuse inside and can lighs up).
YAMAHA CR-600

This tends to be one of the most asked questions these days and since these aren't picked up for under 15 bucks anymore, they tend to be substantial purchases now. I've got very similar models, mostly upstream from these and none really call to me to haul out and crank some Van Halen. Don't get me wrong I love each of them but there's nothing really different about them except age and wattage. With the big watt monsters I can usually tell the sonic signiture difference but it's really hard, if not impossible to blind-fold brand the little guys by sonics alone.

Personally I'd just listen to them, move some of the knobs and dials and see if there's any scratchiness. I'd also plug in a phone and see how streaming sounds. Before that I'd look for common repairs for each model and make sure they don't have unobtainium parts. The reality is most units tend to need a service and flipper units seem to need it more.

Good luck, I'd pick the cleanest and the one that you like the looks best.

Condition is FAR more important than brand and wattage.

Last month I bought this STA 111 just because it was slim and looked nice for a comp unit. But the dumb thing sounds really nice with the Minimus 7sWs that it was designed for. I hooked it up to some bigger speakers and it was an ass kicker......

I have always used vintage receivers for my main computer system. When I bought a new 32in monitor, the dumb thing was so high on top of the MCS unit that I started looking for a slimline one. I popped on to ebay and the first thing I saw was this STA 111. It was cheap and in good condition...

Condition being equal I'd go with The Yamie or the Kenny.

As an alternative, look at some of the smaller receivers. An sx-424 or cr-3030 might be a nice option, they are still flying under the radar while everyone seeks out the higher models (loaded with the options you don't need anymore).

Personally, I'd go with an older Yamaha RX-AV850, or something along this line. It would be great to have a decent hook-up option for your TV. I've got an newer "Aventage", but it's dedicated for TV application only. Just another Plan B to consider before you make your eventual choice.

Plenty of power, and still considered a Vint, being over 20 years old was my suggestion.


If you were not to add the TV into the formula...it would be different from my POV what you are trying to do with your meld of use.
