Help! TT signal not making it out!

The 500 stylus is a very different shape. Those are shorter and wider bodies and the stylus won't go on an 881.

Hmm. I seem to remember putting a 681 stylus into one of my 881 cartridges and it working, though not well. But that was a while ago, and my memory is not as good as it once was. Maybe I'll try it again in the next few days and see if it duplicates the OP''s experience.

In any case, if the OP definitively confirms that indeed this cart and stylus used to work properly, the MM/MI issue would not seem to be the problem?
Thank you and the mystery deepens - YES, the cart worked fine right up to around 1985 when it was put in storage and CDs were the rage. I then took it out of storage around 2002 to hook it up to a new Rotel RSP-1066 surround system. It did not work and I bought a Creek preamp and still did not work. Out of storage again and here we are…

I did email Joseph at cartridge_retipping and asked for his POV and if he could identify…

Per my research and google: The color-coding on vintage Stanton styli for the 500 series indicates specific performance characteristics and tracking forces. The black plastic body with the "Stanton" text and the gray dot specifically identifies it as the D5105A model.

This would make the whole matter even more mysterious as to how that stylus ended up on my cartridge…And worked fine….

Anyhow, LMK what you and all would reco for the best replacement stylus for the 881S

Genuine re-tipped or Jico if available.

Continuity fine on head shell tip to pin, and cart lead wires. so…
- 881S came up w almost identical, passing numbers on the ohmmeter confirming cart continuity is fine.
So, it must be the stylus, which is a shame considering excellent tip condition…
I know you may have already tried this, but did you remove and reinsert the stylus into the cartridge body?

Thanks!

Thx and as I dig deeper, the D5105A as noted to pair w the 881S

So, the plot thickens... A trusted cartridge re-tipping veteran had this to say about the picture and problem:
This stylus does not work with that cartridge. The stylus has no magnet and neither does the cartridge. No magnet = no signal.
The stylus appears to me to be a D6807 .7 mil for general broadcast DJ work. It's a moving iron stylus meaning that it relies on a magnet within the cartridge body to operate. The 881 is a moving magnet cartridge and relies on a magnet in the stylus to work. With no magnet in the stylus or the cartridge, there is little to no flux disturbance and, therefore, little to no signal generated.

Now, I will give a think and get back with any updates. I can't for the life of me figure how that stylus got on that cartridge....

What stylus (model

Thx. What particular genuine re-tipped stylus (model #) would be best w the 881S..?
ParaTrace, MicroRidge, or similar. No model numbers, it means a new stylus tip mounted on your existing good stylus grip.

Pretty sure that is a 680 Spherical stylus on your 881 body, 680 is MI and 881 is MM, will never work (I tried it once just to see).
The thing that’s wack about all this is it did work for years going through a JVC JRS 200 mkII for years. Right into the phono input. I’m going to dig the JVC out of storage and try the TT and cart and report back - and to make sure I’m not crazy. It was the 70s though, so…

but assure this was original set up Stanton 881S with what I believe is a D81s stylus…

To me your needle would rather look like a D6807A (= needle for the 681A).

Greetings from Munich!

P.S.: Oops, should have read the second page before replying. But I agree with the needle identification by the "trusted cartridge re-tipping veteran", that you've posted in reply #26.

I even have a cartridge which fits this stylus, by the way.

So, it was the stylus as I recently purchased a 881S w a D81s and swapped out the stylus. I cannot figure out how the D6807A got on that cartridge…?

Now, the cart and D81s stylus I bought second hand and the stylus brush mount within is broken. The brush can ride properly, but is unstable. My next question:
- Do I need the brush, as I anti-static brush each LP play..?
- Pros/cons on the stylus brush?

I also have a LP Gear Shibata D81s replacement coming and the LP Gear advice in no stylus brush. And I understand the tone arm weighting will need to be adjusted…

Brush is fully optional, there's no requirement to use it. Some folks like it with, some without. The new brushes are not as good as the old and are not trimmed right much of the time.

Tracking without brush is recommend at 1.25g vs 2.25g with the brush, for oem stylus. Not sure the tracking weight for aftermarket.
