Help! what are these worth?

Hi...I'm a newbie. Got a question:

vintage pair of Maggies, Tympani 1D's. original condition. I thought they sounded stellar. Sent them to Magnepan for a once over, and they say they need about $1300 in repairs. So my question is: what should these be worth in as is needing repair condition, and what should they be worth if they come fresh (renewed) from the factory?

I'm not sure if they're worth sinking $1300 into. I would really welcome your advice...

thanks!

Great speakers, but as far as I know (and this is a really big caveat) their big problem is wires seperating from the diaphragm, and you could fix this yourself, if you are daring and handy, for very little money -- glue is the big expense. But my big question is this -- can you buy the same speaker in operating order for the same, or less money? I think you might be able to, but I don't follow Maggie prices. And you would not have any warrantee, so, I would not reject Magnepan's offer out of hand.

Thanks...
these were operable, and to my untrained ear sounded great...but Magnepan said all 6 panels were UV damaged and had corroded conductor wires. Their quote is to build 6 new panels, new covers, new cartons and sound checks. I'll end up with basically new Tympanis...but... would that make them $1300 speakers? or would they be worth more after the repairs?

are they even worth repairing?

A rebuild will make them NEW and they will have the sound of NEW tympanies. If you were to try to replace them with that sound, the 3.6 or 20.1 maggie might be able to do it in a smaller package but then these are usually not available used and are over 2k for the 3.6 used and much more for the 20.1.

If you want these speakers and love their sound the rebuild is a bargain. If you want to sell the speakers, you will not get your money back from the rebuild.

This is just like taking a car in to the Dealer for service, they say it needs everything. You will have a no questions vehicle when you fork out the money which will not significantly increase the value of the car, but you will be able to use the car for a long time before it needs any major maintenance.

Your speakers have damaged glue holding the wires to the Mylar (UV damage), these wires are also corroding which if left unchecked will cause the wire to stop conducting electricity and the speaker will stop working (woofer or tweeter). The linked site has info on how to repair these speakers but the woofer section needs a jig made to install the wires properly. The tweeter is much easier.

Magnepan will ship back speakers that are essentially new. If you like em and want to keep em...might be the way to go.

Ask on the MUG forum, those guys know maggies.
