Help with a Magnavox Console?

Hi everyone. I found this Magnavox Console at a Goodwill and was wondering if anyone could help IDing it and possibly helping me with a few minor issues with it.

The most I can tell is it's a Magnavox Model# 2P3323 Run Number 2 (seeing Google results, it appears the Turntable is made by Collaro)

Here's pictures of it:

As for the problems it's having:

1. One end of the string that moves the radio tuner has come unhooked. Does anyone know how it's supposed to go back on (and possibly how to take the radio out of the console to hook the string back on as it's at the front of the unit)

2. The turntable seems to be off it's speeds. I have to set it to 16 to play 33's and 33 to play 45's If I set it to the correct settings, the records play too fast.

3. The turntable takes a few seconds to get up to proper speed after not being used overnight. (I've been told elsewhere that the grease may be hardening, right now it only takes 3 seconds or so to get to full speed)

Otherwise, it plays great (especially after getting a new needle for it :) )

Any help, info, etc... is appreciated

Yes, the turntable issue is almost certainly dried grease and gummed up mechanism. It shouldn't be too difficult to remove it from the console chassis and give it a good cleaning and new lubrication.

The radio dial re-string should be pretty obvious once the radio is removed, but how it's done might take a little detective work. It shouldn't be too complicated either.

I'd start by looking underneath to see if there are retaining screws holding the radio assembly to the top plate, then see if the top plastic bezel can be removed as there might be screws hidden under it. The dials probably pull straight off and might reveal retaining screws or nuts.

It looks like there's three screes that hold the radio unit to a side wall and possily two inverted nuts beneath two of the knobs on the top. I think that's all that's holding the radio to the console. someone on another forum said I needed a specialty tool that servicemen have to remove it so I assume that's what removes the inverted nuts (Can't think of what else to call them :) )

As for removing the turntable, are there any general instuctions on doing that or do I need to find a service manual for this particular model?

I'm not sure what an "inverted nut" is, but post a picture and we might be able to help.

The turntable almost certainly lifts out from the top. Look underneath to see if there are any retaining latches holding it down. If not, then it should come straight out. If it doesn't, then remove everything that is removable from the top side of the turntable and that might reveal hidden screws.

Most of the time the turntables are held in with some sort of funky flip-latch sort of thing. You flip it up so it will go through the hole and just lift the table out. Normally there is one per large screw going through the base surrounding the platter. 2 or 3 are typical.

I have just removed the amp. on a 64 Astro Sonic. It was held in by two screws going right to left about 1" in from the side and about 2" down. You remove these then there are two hex headed screws at the bottom of the amp. going left to right. I took photos and then removed the wires then removing the knobs I took out the bottom screws and lowered the amp. The knobs just pull off. I did not need to remove the pal-nuts. The tt. pulls out by sliding the rectangular plate at the right front and left rear and then twisting through 90 degrees and the tt. lifts straight up. Disconnect the molex connector and the rca's and she is good to go. I have included a dial stringing guide from the Magnavox R 204 Transistor radio chassis manual. See this thread for tt. strip down.

You need to join Magnavoxfriends in Yahoo groups, very helpful people. Your console is on page 24 of the 1971/2 Magnavox stereo brochure. The specs are on page 31. It's 10 watts a channel, has 2 x 8" woofers and 2 x 5" treble speakers. In popular Mediterranean styling in grained Pecan finish.

And when you flip the turntable over to work on the lubrication issues (Isopropyl Alcohol or WD-40 & Q-tips are good cleaners, use sparingly) make sure you clip down that tone arm so you don't damage it.
