Help with a Thorens TD 160!

Here's the correct spring placement. The top of the spring (wide opening) has a high side to it. That high side should be the furthest away from the platter bearing, on the opposite side of the hanging bolt. The bottom of the spring (small opening) the front edge of the springs should be pointed directly at the platter bearing. Do this for all three springs the same way! The sub chassis is more level! Make sure the top rubber grommet is fully seated on the sub chassis!

I start with the platter being fully down (touching) the top plate. Make sure the plinth is level before you start with the springs! Start by turning each nut a bit to raise up the platter. Use a bubble level to make sure the platter stays level. You don't want a very loose bounce! The number of seconds bouncing isn't the most important thing. You want a piston movement, straight up and down. Push down not on the spindle but about halfway in between the spindle and the tonearm on the record. I think that's where some make their mistake.

Regarding the springs, the ones that were originally on it looked a little rusted and I didn't want to take any chances so I purchased a set of replacement springs from Vinyl Nirvana also and those are the ones that you see in the pictures. I have also tried to put the less stiff side towards the spindle as Dave recommends in his video about replacing and setting these up.

From what I've seen on videos, it looks like the Thorens bounce should have the platter go up and down. My "bounce" goes more to the sides.

I haven't had the opportunity to test those VN springs yet. But do you remember if the original rusty ones where in a similar uneven tension ?

Evidently with such disparates tensions your bounce will be more of a wobble than a bounce. Evenly tension will give a proper bounce.

A proper bounce will provide the air and solid borne vibrations protection but also participate in the airy sonic signature of your Thorens.

From what I remember, the tension was uneven since the front of the TT was a little higher than the back. I don't really remember the sides. At that time also, the belt was rubbing at 45 RPM.

Odd thing that Google (best to boycot) Photos. I use to see them pictures of yours now I can't. Is that when you're logged in ?

OK, but have you since first make certain that your turntable chassis is leveled ?This is so crucial as the first step into that setting.

That is weird and it may have something to do when I am logged into Google.

The TD-160 chassis is level, but I'm now thinking that something might be off with the sub-chassis where the springs sit. I just can't get my platter to sit any lower than 9 mm from the top of the chassis to the bottom of the platter.

I have also brought this conversation over to the Thorens Owner thread to see if they might be able to assist.

This is driving me nuts!

If you can't figure it out, I suggest you look for a different sub chassis. ;)
