Help with difference

I am trying to find out if these two transistors (2SD313 and 2SD313P) can be replaced by the same new transistor. I tried to use the AI Grok to figure out what the differences are for those two, since they are both used on the Power Supply assembly board in the Pioneer LX-626 (AWR-029)

There is a pretty extensive thread dedicated to transistor substitutions:

To hell with AI (and I say this as a machine learning scientist).
Here's what a typical Web search engine spits out by just looking up the part number:

3A current handling, max voltage 60V C-B and C-E, 5V E-B. Ultimately, the transistor in question (Q3) is just a linear voltage regulator. You can use any transistor with sufficient current handling as a substitute. There's even a thread here on AK about it; also here. That should make it pretty easy to replace. ;)

Mr. MacPhantom your fast and enlightening:)

How ever. I still don't see the difference between the two? - what is the P meaning in the 2SD313P vs. the 2SD313 no P (transistors Q1 vs Q3).

Both come from the same package TO-220, but i wonder why Pioneer used two different if they do exactly the same.

Anyone with an idea about the above question?

It might be that AI is sometimes not wanted, but sometimes it can be helpful. So far i have the following information from Grok..

Current Gain (hFE):
  • The 2SD313 has variants (e.g., 2SD313C, D, E, F) with different DC current gain (hFE) ranges:
    • 2SD313C: 40–80
    • 2SD313D: 60–120
    • 2SD313E: 100–200
    • 2SD313F: 160–320
  • The "P" in 2SD313P could indicate a specific hFE range, possibly aligned with one of these classifications or a custom range defined by the manufacturer. Without a specific datasheet for 2SD313P, it’s unclear which range it falls into, but it’s a common reason for suffix variations.

Why do you think they need changed to begin with? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hard to say. It may be a special designation since it looks like it's being used a a regulator on the power supply, hence the "p". I doubt it's anything to worry about.

What does the parts list have there for Q1? It may not be the same as the board layout.

Thanks for your interest :D

So...looking closer at the two transistors with the heatsink off and cleaned up. One is actually a 2SD313E and the other 2SD313D (Sanyo D313D 8i and Sanyo D313E 8j) so NOT the same as the schematics say. They are not visually damaged, but as far as i understand there are yays and nays to replace them when giving it an overhaul anyway. The receiver has never been touched and everything works "ok" except the radio, from which i get next to nothing. So i thought i would make a parts and replacement list my self (both for the "fun" and because there is no service manual or partslist for the LX-626 available anywhere) for future reference and to use now for the caps that measures out bad.

The schematic only says "2SD313" with no letters. So you don't have to worry about the hFE differences.
