My name is John and to start, I'll throw in a bit of background of the receiver. The radio used to be my grandfather's, and when I received it, it wasn't working (one didn't hear the "Clic" of the relay when you turned it on). All the lights turned on, it was receiving FM and AM signal, but no "Clic" and thus, no sound.
I took it to a friend to see if he could fix it, and we changed four transistors (two NTE-280 and two NTE-281. I understand that those transistors are for one channel). After that the radio worked fine for some time, but all of a sudden the relay just started going on and off and on and off, cutting the sound at the speakers. It started gradually and by the end the speakers gave dirty sound (very annoying cracking sound).
Since then I didn't use it again, until now. I changed the same transistors as I did with my friend before, and now the sound is clean again. I hoped that the problem would go away, but the relay still cuts the sound every now and then, but at least I don't have dirty, cracking sound this time.
I have basically two questions: the first one is, how can I stop that damn relay from activating? Ok ok, it is doing what it's supposed to do (apparently) but it sucks when your listening to music and all of a sudden it stops
. Is there some test I can do to see if it a faulty relay? What could the problem be?
Second question is, one of the speaker lacks the binding posts (maybe that ruined the first change of transistors?) Does anyone know where I can get new ones, or is it better to do an upgrade and use a different kind of connection?
Also, I want to try and keep this radio in good shape. Is there like a thread about how to clean, maintain, etc, an old receiver?
