help with Quad 405-2 control unit 34 problem

Hi All,
So I took the plunge and picked up a mint ("looking") Quad 405-2 with a Control unit 34 on ebay.
It arrived very clean, complete with manuals, I just had to order the 5 pin din cable to connect the two units...
now I have finally hooked it up, the lights on the 34 work ok, the front light on the 405-2 works, however, I can't get much output from it at all - on maximum volume on the 34 I can hear the output very quiet through the speakers.
I assume this means the 405-2 is not working? is the sound being produced by the Control unit?

Its my first Quad setup so I don't really know what I'm doing forgive me

I'd be most grateful for any suggestions

I should also add, I originally was using a turntable, but I've also tried it with a CD player
same result
