Help with Rotel Power Amp RB981

Have a system in my house, set up by someone about almost 20 years ago.
6 or 7 sets of Speakers driven by the Rotel RB981. The ROTEL is connected to an
even older Sony TA-AX430 (stereo app which was part of a set (radio, tape player, phonograph - i said it was old) I bought back in the 80's). The output plug of the AMP goes to the Rotel amp. so there is no volume control from the Sony.

The speakers throughout the house have individual volume controls which have 10 discrete volume positions instead of a continuous volume range.
My problem is that the first position is OK for a party or gathering, but all of the other 9 positions are way too loud. And even the lowest position is too loud for background music.
What kind of volume control switch can I use between the Sony output and the Rotel input to let me turn the volume way down so that the I can enjoy the system in my house. I am looking for the volume on the second position to be the volume on 10 (cause it doesn't go to 11)

I would appreciate any help I can get, be specific as possible if you can name the components, model #'s etc.

Maybe try using a separate preamp to the Rotel amp??

This would help tame down the volume as it sounds like your current connection is connected to the tape out or line out of the other amp so you wound't have the volume control except at your individual room locations.
