Help with stuck knob on MC2505

Picked up a near mint MC2505 and MX115 from the original owner off CL for a great price. I'm in the process of recapping and cleaning up the haze behind the meter glass on the 2505 but the speaker switch knob is stuck. The owner had the switch replaced by an authorized repair shop that used a Mc OEM part 20 years ago. The knob sticks out about an 1/8" further than the rest. I don't know if that's because the shaft was a little longer or the diameter is off or there's a problem with the knob itself.

I have pulled & wiggled and wiggled & pulled until my fingers ached but can't get it to budge. Not sure I want to use pliers because I don't want to damage the knob (I do have a spare if it comes to that though). If were an engine bolt I'd get out my torch but it's too close to the glass for that.

Any thoughts?

Two spoons on either side of the knob with a cloth underneath to protect the glass. Be very careful not to apply too much pressure.
 
Well I think anything you do has a risk in damaging something in the process. I'd be tempted to use some heat myself. I would think you could slide something between the knob and glass to protect the glass from damage from the heat.
 
The shaft is 2mm longer and a tiny bit thicker. I will grind off the excess and sand the diameter to make it work.
