hi all; I just acquired from Epay an Akai GX77 reel tape deck....ad said it was in good consition..said it ran but a tad slow..so now i have it....powers up, lights and digital display come on..that is ALL......motors dont turn, hubs dont turn, solenoids click, click but dont move....there is an empty remote plug in the back...should something be pugged into it for the deck to operate? a dummy plug..or...???

I have been looking over a Concertone (early 60's) reel tape deck for a friend, and it would do fast-forward and rewind just fine (scary-fast, in fact), but no movement for playback. I took a look in the back and saw a bunch of naked pulleys! There was some blobs of black goo on one of the pulleys which may have been the remains of the belts that this thing had at one time, but there sure wasn't anything connecting any of the pulleys to each other now! Have you looked inside to see the condition of your belts (or if you even have any)??

Yep, i did remove the back and peer inside the Akai GX77, it has three motors, and a single dc motor driving dual flywheels for both way recording and playback....lights come on...and reel tapes installed, threaded correctly...and tensed up, inside, power on, push play,,,,click click, from solenoids...nothing more...motors to not turn...no winding either direction..
say does this have fuses inside? i have not found any. any and all help is appreciated....this machine is similar to the Technics RS1500 series in design...six heads, three aligned vertically left side and three heads aligned vertically right side..a tension roller rises up between to keep tapes against heads properly tensioned.....single large drive belt to both capstans....once again.. motors do not turn with lights on, and tapes tensioned and play pushed...just faint click-click...

Comparing this unit to an RS-1500 is not a very good comparison. There are some superficial similiarities, but that is about all..
The big problem with the GX77 is all the belts that go bad. That player has belts driving both the capstans, and the reels from what I understand.
Now, have you threaded a tape through the unit yet? Most decks have sensors that must be triggered to get the motors to spin.
