Depends on the store. Some are heads up people others aren't.
I'd insist on a written guarantee that if damaged their insurance will pay.
Insufficient Packaging is their go-to escape hatch.
Ya know...depending on where it's going - I'd see if I could find somebody on U-Ship to transport it.
Seriously - riding in a good carton in the back seat of a car would be better than dancing with the UPS Belt.

Unfortunately it won't be UPS who's packing it - it'll be the local franchisee, who may or may not do a good job. Only thing is it'd be harder for UPS to wiggle out of it if push came to shove.

Not a big fan of UPS either, but late year I had them package a Technics SL-1210M5G I sold on ebay.
I told them I wanted it doubled boxed.
Shipped from Boston to Chicago without a hitch.
The buyer said when he received you could hit with a sludge hammer and it wouldn't of put a dent in it!
I guess it all depends on the how good the guys at the local UPS Store are.
The only downside was the cost............$110.00 for packaging and shipping. I quoted shipping cost in the ebay ad at $50.00. My mistake so I ate the extra $60.00:sigh:

It would be a real shame to see such a nice unit smashed. I wonder if the seller would work with a buyer to get it PROPERLY packed? Maybe that's just wishful thinking, giving the many, many horror stories we've all read of insufficient packing?

I've shipped some heavy items packed by our local UPS Store and most have been fine with only one mishap. I was attracted to the idea that if an item is packed by them, then it is guaranteed by them. But lets say that the dustcover gets cracked. Will they reimburse you for the full price of the table? The problem being, it's really hard to find replacement parts for a lot of these vintage pieces.
The one item that I had damaged was the dust cover for a Akai GX-77 reel to reel, which would be near impossible to replace without replacing the entire unit. Turned out that the buyer was really cool about it and just glued it, so didn't want to pursue a claim, but I really don't think that they would have reimbursed for the entire unit.
I'm just glad that I rarely ever buy or sell anymore and that I don't have to worry about it as shipping, especially turntables, can be a real nightmare.

Just because the sign out front says UPS Store does not mean that they have anything to do with UPS. On the contrary, those companies have nothing to do with UPS. They are independently owned and one store is not even related to the other stores. The only way to ship with UPS or FedEx is to ship directly from their stations, or have an account and have it picked up at your home or business.
My big Onkyo TX-8500MkII was packed and sent from a UPS store. They filled the box up half way with peanuts, placed the unit in the box and filled it the rest of the way with peanuts. That was it. When I got the box at my house, there were no longer any corners on the box. It was round. I got lucky that the damage was very minor, but it could have been a real disaster.
Pack all boxes yourself. Ship directly. That is the only way to do it right.
