This is a unit I picked up to hold me over till I choose a plasma in about 8 months. It's adequate as long as I don't pay too much attention to better stuff.

Pioneer VSX-1014TX
This will do for a few of years.

Athena 5.1 System & ACI Force Subwoofer
The Force is great, and the Athena will be substantially upgraded after the plasma is in place. A 2nd force sub is under consideration.

Pioneer DV-578A
An entry level player noted for decent progressive scan performance. Since I have a fair selection Asian DVDs, the Pioneer has been modded for code free play by JVB Digital. A second higher quality DVD player will be added to go with the plasma.

Final config scheduled for next Dec.

We eagerly await Rev. 'B'. ;)

In the meantime, what you got ain't bad.

Thanks. My research is coming along quite well. I may have to venture out to view some plasma screens in the near future.

Rev B? A fellow Apple user?

Don't you miss the SET sound?????
Ron

Ron,
I miss it with a passion. I was using my Audionote CD 3.1x with a (Moth) 6SN7 based Eddie Current HD300 headphone amp and a Senn HD650. The AN is now gone, and I have an SACDMods Sony NS755V arriving soon. For some reason, I am kind of excited about receiving the Sony. It just did not seem cost effective to have the AN in a headphone system, which to me, gives a crippled sort of sound no matter how much you spend.

Cool guards, or hilts you've got there on your home page. I especially liked the Sakura. Does Sakura refer to the flower?

Thanks,

I'm pretty happy with the Panasonic. I'm having to restrain myself from immediately ordering a Pioneer 59AVI. It might be better to take the time to optimize and familiarize with what I have, before moving on to a higher-end player.

Sleeper

That Pioneer VSX1014TX is a rebadged VSX52TX ELITE receiver. . . Both are identical. . . I just sold my VSX45TX ELITE and replaced it with a 1014. . .

At 459.99 Best Buy I think it is the biggest sleeper going. . . I love mine. . .

10 years ago, they did the same thing with the VSX-D906S. It was under a grand and is still a very good HT receiver. The best part is that you also had the option to use it as a pre/pro...all for 900 bucks...back then that was the bargain of the century!

Of course the 1014TX is a better bargain still!

"Final config. scheduled for next December"...Awww, man, NO ! Doncha know it'll never really be "final"...There's ALWAYS "one more upgrade" out there...-Sandy G.

No...really, I even plan to use stock cables etc., etc. I'm determined not to do the obsessed audiophile thing with HT. I'll be upgrading my speaker wiring to generic OFC 14 ga. but that's about it. The simple goal is good sound quality, with killer picture quality. All this with the caveat that I will be moving to a bigger screen in two years. ;) ;)

After I upgrade the DVD player, the speakers are next in line.

I may or may not go with an external scaler. It depends on how much improvement I get with the new DVD player. (Did I just slip in another upgrade?)

We want pictures!!!

I'll try....

Yeah, I thought I was at my "final config" after I got the Tivo. How wrong I was!

I did pretty good though, I haven't upgraded the monitor, speakers, amp, pre/pro, LD (ha ha) since 1995!

Update...

Good deal!!

Update:
I now have a Denon 2900 in place, and it has trouble reading some discs. I will try to return or exchange. With all the info on the web about Denon and this particular problem, you'd have thought I would have known better--but nooooooo.

Wanna get sick??

Guess what??

Pioneer is hawking their new VSX-1015TX-K now. . . 10 more wpc and THX Select2. . .

Still the 1014 is a giant killer. . .143wpc all channels driven. . . something like 180 something at 4ohms. . . try that with another low line Pioneer. . .

Do you use your 1014 for music? My next upgrades will be be in the audio realm. The main limitation will be the size of the sats which I want to limit to a 12" max height.

Latest upgrade
Having returned the Denon 2900 and reinstalled my Pioneer DV578A, I can no longer be satisfied with the 578s picture quality. The 2900 was such a huge jump in quality, that the step down brought out the 578s faults out all to clearly.

Enter the Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi. Its been in the system for a couple of days and is a keeper. The PQ of the 2900 and the 59AVi are basically in the same league. One big difference is that with the all digital HDMI connection, the 59AVi definitely has a sharper and more digital quality to its picture.
