Hey, check out my new 3-string Cigar Box Guitar!

Thanks Gary!

Hey, you should build one of these for yourself and the youngster then we can start a band.

A very bad band :D

What a great combo - I saw the amplifier thread earlier and now this instrument! I must get into this. I have been racking my brains for gifts for my brothers and their families for Christmas and this has got to be it! I had better get started.

Thanks Arkay!

In my snooping around the internet looking for build ideas, I came across quite a few home brew single string instruments like Diddly Bows or more of a upright bass like you are thinking of building. Plucked or slide, it's surprising how versatile many of these are and there and have watched several YouTube videos that prove that out.

Good luck, and make sure to post some pics of it when you get it done

Thanks for what? You deserve good feedback for something that nice!

Actually, I got most of the ideas for what I'm making off the Internet, and especially YouTube videos. We probably watched some of the same ones. I was really impressed with what some people can do with even simple, DIY instruments. It looks like a lot of fun, and the barriers to entry are really low, since they mostly use recycled stuff; the biggest limitations are probably one's own imagination, plus a willingness to practice enough to become at least decent with playing the things... :D

I think all too often these days, people want to be spoon-fed entertainment. They want to buy the computer game or plastic pre-programmed toy ready-made and ready-to-go at the touch of a button. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with that, but I like the idea of creating one's own entertainment in a more traditional, old-fashioned way, using one's hands to make something that can be fun and also bring fun and enjoyment to others. The Halloween costume is really more of an excuse to do something along those lines, than any actual celebration of Halloween.

Reminds me of some interesting "prison guitars" I've seen. Very, very, cool, and if that amp ever needs work send it my way.

Maybe they will let me bring it with me if I ever go to prison for something.

Hey Jay, check this one out.

I got this one in trade for one of the amps I built from a guitar builder (Jay Gilliam at TinyGuitars) from Virginia. This one's a long neck (26 3/8" scale) 4-stringer with undermount dual Piezo pickup w/volume control.

I forgot to ask him but believe it's strung up with middle four strings of a medium weight 6 string pack and I have it tuned to GCEA. She plays low with a lot of attitude and growl.

I'm just starting to get comfortable working my way around a 3-string and now this 4-stringer rolls in. It's a completely different animal chording wise but I'll figure it out soon enough.

Man, this is a nice one!
